How can I keep my bedroom cool in near-tropical temperatures without an airco?

For next week, they're predicting temperatures of 30 degrees and higher in Belgium (and probably much of Western Europe as well). I checked some predictions, and the local temperatures can in some places get higher than in subSaharan Africa (where my parents are going next week).

I have an airconditioning unit, but it's too bulky to get to my room. I also can't install a portable version for various reasons.

My room is about 15 by 13 feet, a 3 pane window with the middle pane opening looking over the East and a door in the southwest corner to a hallway. I need a way to keep this room cool while the weather is so hot. Would it help if I moisten some towels and hang them in various places, so the evaporating water can absorb some heat from the room?

    Swamp cooler.

Easier if you just looked it up than trying to describe it.

Your just make your room into a sauna if you do that.

Just take cold showers and have a fan on you to dry off, and drink things like iced tea

You really haven't experienced heat and humidity have you? The worst thing is adding moisture to hot air. If it were me I'd bite the bullet and buy a window unit AC.

Don't those two, get your body to react by creating more internal heat?

Yeah humidity makes heat 10x worse. The best options for you are either just getting an AC unit, or sitting in front of a fan while staying hydrated and KEEPING THE WINDOWS OPEN.

Depends how dry it is to begin with, evaporative cooling works well in dryer air.

Though in hindsight, Belgium is probably kind of humid like all of Europe tends to be lol.

Do you have a screened/secondary front door?

When its hot and I don't want to use the AC I open my front door and the window in my room and turn on a fan pointed towards me between them. Creates a breeze coming in and going out of the house rather than just blowing already hot air on you if you have no flow.

Close all your windows during the day, so that the fresh air stays inside, and only open them at night, repeat the process next morning.

the creepy part is that would be baelish's response to this conversation, even read it in his voice.

op; is it gonna be a dry 30c or is it gonna be like 25c but feels like 30c+ with humidity?

fans are gonna be your friend either way, id suggest installing a ceiling fan, they are great for cooling a room off, i think you want it to pull the air up when its hot out to bring the cooler ground air up and then blow down in the winter to push the warm air down, just make sure its installed properly/securely!

also if you can find one of these; http://www.sportys.com/media/catalog.../6/16262_3.jpg they are also sweet, usually u can change the direction with a switch, if it cools off at night let it bring some of that cool air inside.

It gets really hot here. I strip down to a t-shirt and shorts, soak those in water and turn on a fan. Also, your body will adapt to the heat in a few days, it will start pumping blood to blood vessels closer to the skin.

I found that when I was on holiday in cypress in high summer, iced tea was the only thing I could drink that kept he cool. Mainly keeping hydrated is important at this time.

Bucket of ice water and soak your feet in there. You'll be shivering. Good luck sleeping though, maybe use a damp washcloth at night.

    Not in residential buildings.
If I'm to believe my american friends, when compared to the states, AC is not much of a thing at all over here .

Get a fan and a spray bottle full of ice water. Mist the water into the fan and sit in front. Also get some icepacks wrapped in barely damp cloth and put them under your armpits and if you get really hot tuck them into your groin. 30 Doesn't sound to bad, is it really humid? It's supposed to be 113/45 here today, but it's pretty dry so not so bad.

Keep windows shut while the room is cooler than the air outside. Keep sunlight out of the room (if you have shutters or blinds outside the windows this helps a lot). Large fans generate quite a bit of heat when turned on.

As for clothes, wear cotton, not synthetic fibres.

Ice, put lots of ice everywhere. Also when they melt you can drink it up.
