What yearly salary do people consider "well off"?

I was playing a mobile game at work today and an argument started over the whole "Pay 2 Win" concept and then it went into how much money per year someone makes is considered "a lot". I was shocked at just how low some people consider "a lot". Maybe because its mostly young people playing these games and maybe its where they live? To me 100k a year isnt really a lot yet people were calling me a troll swearing up and down than 100k a year means you are rich. Im sorry but 100k a year is no where near being "rich" What yearly salary would you consider wealthy?

50K a year around here is a lot of money, 3 bedroom house, nice car etc. Really it depends, I know couples who make over a $100K and they are mostly broke because they don't spend wisely and on the flip side there are people who live really well at $30K.

100k without a currency is kinda pointless...

Dunno, I'd consider 50k € yearly well off. Not rich, but enough to never really look at money.

    Comfortable? ~$70k. Well off? $100k+
'Twas a cutlass swipe or an ounce of lead
Or a yawing hole in a battered head
And the scuppers clogged with rotting red
And there they lay I damn me eyes

70-80 for single well off, 100-120 for couple, 150-180 for a small family.

Depends of course on the individual, single vs married, how many kids you have, etc but I think $50k a year sounds well off to me in most situations. Comfortable.

That would really depend on where you live. I would probably say over $100,000 for a single person in the US.

It depends entirely on the cost of living for where you live.

100k wouldn't make you "well off" in much of California, for example, but is enough to live really comfortably if you live in, say, Alabama.

It depends on the situation. I mean if you have kids, a stay at home wife, live in a decent house then yeah 100k isn't enough. When I started in my field I was making 44k and would have considered myself well off. I was a young single guy with paying only $800 a month on a mortgage plus my utilities and food. I never once said to myself "gee, I can't afford that" when I wanted something and generally increased my bank account by 1k per month.

I have heard 75,000 is what people need to be comfortable and happy, any more than that and it doesnt make you any happier.

But wealthy? Probably 100-150k. But again it all depends on where you live. Ive always lived off very little. My parents had a lot of money, but kids around me always had a lot more than I did. Ive never really been on vacation, and I have never owned a new car. Id consider myself well off at 40k. Well, provided someone gave me a downpayment for a house. >.>

Housing costs in the area play a huge role. I pay $1675 for a 1 bedroom beachfront apt in CA where I could prob live in a 3 bedroom house for the same in the midwest. I'd say in CA, $100k+ a year is well off.

You need to define well off.

But 30k where I live could cover your needs and have plenty left over to save.

Well it depends where you live and what sort of lifestyle you're looking for, right? I live in an urban area, I like to go out for drinks at least one night a week, and I like to travel to another country at least once per year on vacation. I also want to be able to put 6% of my salary in my 401k and save a little each month. I currently make $80k and I can do those things, including squirreling away about $600/month on average. Comfortable. When I made $55k, I was holding even without being able to put anything to my 401k or save on a monthly basis. My salary is about to go up again, and I'm probably about to become "well off."

If I lived in the burbs, cooked every night at home, and didn't like to travel, I'd probably be pretty comfortable at $50k a year.

Enough that you're only spending half your wages each month.

Obviously that depends on location and lifestyle. It just gives you that buffer, that if you wanted to, you could tell your current boss to fuck himself, and do whatever you want for a bit.

100k a year is about $50 an hour.

Two income families with each person making $25 an hour is low range, unless you decide to work at Taco Bell the rest of your life.

There are groceries clerks in some areas in America that make over $20.

In 2001, when I briefly worked for a grocery store, a journeyman food clerk was making $18 an hour.

It really depends on where you live and the standard of living.

would paying $93,000 this year in taxes qualify as "well off"?

  20. #20
if you make 100k yearly and live in Massachusetts and own a large home + family of Five 100k isn't enough.

Salary and what you actually take home are very different.
