Windows 10 Installation. What can I keep?

So, I plan on installing W10 with the installer provided by microsoft themselves called the "Media Creation Tool" (64Bit)

The first time I attempted to install it this morning. It was a relatively quick download and I thought I could upgrade but..

Instead of being faced with a choice of what to do. All I can choose is that my system would be made clean with the "Clean install".

Two more options are usually available! One of which keeps your data and the other keeps your data and programs.

Now, I am running a german version of Windows 7 and I am currently re-trying to download it once more but the download takes incredibly long this time, I am guessing that is due to it being the afternoon and Microsoft's servers being immensely busy.

Is there a way to keep my programs and data with my Windows 7 Home Premium (licensed and activated) 64 bit version?

I am aware a clean install from scratch would be otherwise better, but I am planning on buying a new computer next year and quite frankly cannot be bothered with fully resetting my current setup.

    That's odd.

I had only the 'Upgrade' option available.

    I'll look into this.

I personally could select to keep my settings and files, but not my apps, because I had Windows 7, I think.

Then again, I also had to reinstall Windows 7 from scratch because something went wrong when upgrading to an SSD.

Thanks! And yeah. At the start of the setup I chose Upgrade (not create a installation device). But then there are three choices and I am locked on to a clean install choice, which I find weird.

:< Good for you, but I am still waiting here with this weirdly slow download and have no clue if it'll work this time at all. I heard rumor that only English/portuguese/Simplified Chinese W7 versions get to choose. Which, again, is very weird.

    when, after doing what.

edit: delete the files in the download folder, then try again in the command line (admin mode).

After deleting all files in "C:\windows\softwareDistribution\Download" five times, it started downloading now without error. Let's see what happens at 100%!

yep, just let it go, after some time a pop up will appear saying you can now update your windows to windows 10. You get to keep everything as it is like this, no need to reinstall or config programs. Just a new UI on your old system. (disclaimer, some things might need some configs, not 100% fail-proof).

It got an error when it reached 100% and began preparing the setup.
the code is "C1900204" *sighs* :< Should I retry?

That is why I am treading with caution here. It only offered a clean install when I first tried this.

weird. is win 7 fully updated?
If you have unlimited bandwith it doesn't cost you anything re-trying the method, but it's weird.

It's better explained in the other topic, but:
if you let windows auto updater run by itself, it will keep everything as it is, only with a new os.
By trying to install with a usb/iso you get the option of choosing, keep everything, keep personal folders, clean install. In my case keep everything wasn't an option (citing language problems). Opted to do on my desktop with the auto updater, keeping everything like it was before the update.
In my laptop I did it by format and installing win8, then upgrading with usb drive, keeping nothing.

I just checked, it is fully updated. I also checked my version. It says it is an OEM version. Are those not eligible for W10?!

I just noticed that my updater may have sneaked an update in. I have restarted my computer and I am going to retry the steps.

I am getting the creeps. The command no longer works D:

.. Okay, after I typed wuauclt.exe /updatenow in my cmd.exe (with admin rights) its showing an update symbol for when I want to shut down my PC.

The command never did anything for me. I didn't get anything in the command line. But if you delete the download folder and then run the /updatenow line, you see the folder getting filled up with files, meaning the command worked.

Can't really help you much more, OEM windows is a bitch.

I read some rumors on the web that it is due to the OEM version not having an associated key with bios.... I wonder if Microsoft is leaving out OEM users.

    This is what I've found.

Waiting for the auto-update in windows as method to update, moved all programs and their registry info so all was working like a charm. It also had 3 options I believe.
Direct-Download from MS server had 2 options and "keep" my file in that version meant only my users folder, Pictures, My documents the yada and no programs.

It was a bummer cos it had Office installed from when I bought it (win7) but I did not get any key, so if I now want my Office in Win10 I have to factory reset the laptop so Office is on it.
Then spend like 4h hours with MS painstakingly slow update process and then when all is there I need to use the auto-update. When that is over I must copy back all my documents, Music, Pictures whatever I would like on it.

Sound fun? (Fuck direct download it suck - wait for auto-update)

But soon after Mr Xi secured a third term, Apple released a new version of the feature in China, limiting its scope. Now Chinese users of iPhones and other Apple devices are restricted to a 10-minute window when receiving files from people who are not listed as a contact. After 10 minutes, users can only receive files from contacts.
Apple did not explain why the update was first introduced in China, but over the years, the tech giant has been criticised for appeasing Beijing.
