It went from 35k to 43.9k in around 8 hours, did something happened to the system?

Most likely people coming back for 6.2.3 that quickly buy a token.
It's saying there are no tokens available for purchase
That would explain the rapid increase in price
Welcome to EU, where the token flies between 60-64k, have fun.
All those bots Blizzard banned 6 months ago returned today.
Between new patch coming out this Tuesday and all the banned cheaters coming back as their 6 months ban is up ...they are buying them up, that's if their accounts were not stripped of their gold and Conquest points.
The more tokens there are on the AH the lower the price, its the basic principle of the demand and supply system, the rarer something is (read as: the less of it exsists) the higher the price
I just wouldn't buy them for 172k gold, the time it takes to aquire that amount of gold is more to me than £9.99 is worth so I would buy the sub with real cash, hell 64k in the EU is pretty much near my limit. Actually you can buy game cards off E-bay for £15 so at least that brings the price down a bit.

supply and demand nothing more
someone has to pay $$ for that token for another to buy it with gold. It could be that # of tokens went down and # of people buying due to 6.2.3 went up.
There have been 2 sharp increases in demand over the last two weeks
1) BlizzCon hype train
2) Patch 6.2.3 / Bots unbanned
Either one of these would cause increases in the amount of tokens purchased, and if people didn't throw more tokens up for sale quickly the price would soar as it has. Having both of them occur without an appropriate number of tokens added to the AH causes the massive price spike you mentioned OP. Looks like the price has only been trending up over the last few months, but it's really shot up the last few weeks. Except this to continue unless people start flooding the AH with tokens again.
I wonder if the people who cared about making gold this way (by selling tokens) have stopped. This late in the expansion there are fewer things to purchase with gold, s they can't be bothered to put tokens on the AH again. There's nothing to do with the gold they already have, so why bother spending more $$$ to make more gold? Just a thought I had.
I felt like the token wasn't high enough to begin with (20k), and I think more players than ever are running 25h Cata raids to avoid paying a sub
