Suicide bomber blows up at least 9 German tourists in Istanbul, Turkey

The suicide bomber who killed at least 10 foreigners Tuesday in a popular central Istanbul tourist area belonged to ISIS, officials said -- an attack that shows the group's nerve, reach and capacity for terror.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan initially said the attacker had Syrian roots. A short time later, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu went one step further, saying the man responsible for the blast came from outside Turkey and was a member of ISIS, the terror menace that has entrenched itself in neighboring Syria and Iraq while proving willing time and again to lash out worldwide.

"These terrorists (are) targeting the whole of civilization," Davutoglu said.

At least nine German nationals died in the attack between the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque tourist attractions in Istanbul's cultural and historic heart, said a Turkish official who declined to be named. Davutoglu indicated that the 15 wounded were from inside and outside his country.

Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said the bomber was born in 1988. He was not among the thousands being tracked by Turkish authorities, having "newly (come) into Turkey from Syria," added Kurtulmus.

Haven't seen a thread on it yet and I don't think any of the current threads are a fit.

Well, you cannot equate 130 deaths with 10. The more people die, the more dramatic it becomes in terms of social activity. There was no pray for London, either. Not saying that this is in any way more acceptable, but still - I don't think it has a lot to do with Istanbul being EU or not.

I took it to mean the 10th was the bomber.

edit: appears the bbc have edited the article past ten minutes or so. Originally it looked like 9 victims and the perpetrator confirmed dead.

We've already got the TSA and people legitimately considering banning entry of an entire religion in to my country, at least. People are afraid disproportionately towards the actual threat of terrorism and will continue to be for a good long time. Rationality lost a long time ago.

The idea that you are in any way likely to be directed affected by terrorist violence and use that fear to dictate opinion is a dangerously stupid precedent. We talk about the dangers that religion poses to advancement of science, especially in regards to things like evolution, but fear is a far worse detriment to rationality than ignorance can ever be.

Yep, I was thinking that too. The suicide bomber has been confirmed to be Syrian.

It makes you wonder, maybe he felt despair or resentful that he was stuck in Turkey and couldn't get to Germany? Just think of how many lives could have been saved if he had been given asylum in Germany and led a happy life there, rather than developing an envious hatred of Germans.
