Will Overwatch go F2P pretty fast?

Wanted to ask this question since it was announced, that Overwatch will be paid game. I have played some FPS games and all of them have the same problem - lack of players to play with. And way too small playerbase causes terrible matchmaking - developers have to open MM dump valves in order to keep queue times within acceptable range. And unbalanced matches turn game into stompfest, which lead game to slowly dying.

So. What do you think? For many players paying for FPS game isn't justified, especially when there are many F2P analogues, so Overwatch population will most likely be tiny. Do you think, that Blizzard will have to switch to F2P model pretty fast to keep this game alive? Do you think, it's reasonable to pay for it at release, instead of waiting till it will go F2P, as you'd waste your money then?

    I don't care about Wow 11.0, if it's not solo-MMO. No half-measures - just perfect xpack.

Overwatch is F2P. You just have to buy it first. There is no subscription model.

I dont believe they will completely remove the buy prize. Lower it? Sure. Everything gets lowered at some point

    No it's not, it's B2P.

There could be a F2P model that would give you 2-3 heroes with the base game and you should pay for the rest of the heroes or even maps but i do not think it is likely as that split the playerbase even more.

not likely to go F2P and personally i do not hope it does, F2P brings in many more problems.

Edit: F2P like the LoL / Smite etc. model.

I think it's like £20. Most PC games are £50+ for big titles. Overwatch will be highly polished and brilliant fun judging by the beta, there is no reason for it to flop if they actively encourage post release development, which is pretty much a given because it's Blizzard, not EA games.

Something can be F2P and B2P. F2P only means it does not have a subscription

F2P means it's FREE to play, so you don't have to pay ANYTHING to play it. Overwatch is B2P.

Paying for Team Fortress clone? Nah. That's why I ask. Do you believe enough players will pay for it to keep it from going F2P? Do you think, that it's stupid to pay for it now, cuz it will go F2P anyway? Do you think, that via making it B2P Blizzard are just trying to grab some easy money, as it's obvious, that game will go F2P pretty fast?

You dont pay to play Overwatch. You pay to buy it, and then its F2P. In other words its B2P and then F2P.

It wont ever be free bro.

    Edit:
To elaborate. yes. I am certain enough people will buy it. its a blizzard game and blizzard do release high quality games no matter what some haters might say.

Blizzard has a lot of goodwill from people outside MMO-C

Just because you don't find it interesting or 'worth' money doesn't mean others see it the same way. By calling it a TF2 clone, it is obvious you aren't interested. I am interested, and would be happy to buy the game for Its price, even pre order at this point if i felt like it. Some of my friends found it interesting and when they revealed the payment model, their interest didn't wane.

I have a feeling It wont be F2P any time soon, as there seems to be a large amount of people interested (although the community seems to be at a bit of a pause since the beta is down) and willing to buy it.

No, I'm just trying to say, that there are F2P analogues, that are as polished, as Overwatch will be. It's the same role-based shooter. Maps and heroes doesn't matter, as gameplay is the same. It's as TF2 clone, as HOTS - is DOTA clone. The only thing, Blizzard are relying on - is marketing. It's like selling bubble gums via putting pictures of cars or favourite cartoon characters into it's wrapper. Gameplay is the same - only maps and characters are different. Do you think people will pay money only for so called ephуmeral "ex-Titan characters"? I can believe, that they would pay for iconic Starcraft/Warcraft characters in Hearthstone and HOTS. But some no-name "Titan" characters? No, won't work.

B2P like all other FPS ...

Yeah, I'm sure Valve with their 10+ millions CS:GO players is really worried about their game dying because it's B2P.

If CS:GO has this much players, then Overwatch will dominate the genre because it's waaay more accessible and has way more potential for non-competitive game modes. It's much faster paced and more flashy.

By that definition Half Life is a Doom clone. They aren't clones, they are games in the same genre, the same way CoD and HL are games in the same genre, but no one says one is a clone of another. They all share some similarities, but a lot of the gameplay aspects are different enough to not call them clones.

P2P- Pay to play. Means you pay a subscription (usually monthly).
B2P- Buy to play. One time purchase.
F2P- Free to play. Usually has micro transactions to subsidize income
P2W- Pay to win. Free to play but contains micro transactions that affect progression of the game (gear, extra turns, currencies).

Probably not, maybe if it becomes unprofitable they will go the microtransaction route, i remember Hon you had to pay 10$ to play it but there was no microtransactions, but it was so unprofitable they had to change the model,
but this is a blizz game so millions will buy it, im sure they will never have such a scenarioo

It will not go f2p, blizzard is a company that can, and will, sell overwatch to the MILLIONS. You say many players paying for FPS game isn't justified, but many, many people do. COD is the #1 fps game and everyone who buys that game buys it for the multiplayer (I'm sure some do for the story, but they are the minority) - and that game does fine. The difference here is it's a once time purchase for players. Future heroes are free.

Ooh good point, diablo 3 is still really good without microtransactions in the US, although maybe the chinese market which has micros is so big it carries the revenue for the US?
