Upgrading Rig from 2012/2013, Need suggestions on what to replace

I've built a gaming rig a few years ago and need some suggestions on what to replace to keep up with the times to run games at 60 fps on ultra or high settings. I also have streaming in mind but don't know whether a capture card or just having a beast gfx card will do or SLI, budget isn't an issue for me although I would prefer to spend less money rather than go all out that being said I'm looking to spend anywhere between 400-1200 USD.

I mainly play FPS games and RPGs like Counter Strike and Diablo but would like to upgrade with the new titles coming out this year like the Division and Legion when it launches an be able to play them in ultra preferably @ 30-60 fps.

I just got new peripherals so I'm set on those except the monitor. Would prefer a 1ms mintor with at least 21" for FPS Gaming.

Change the graphic's card and buy a SSD for yourself.

850 EVO of at least 250GB is my recommendation for the SSD, but you can also go with something from Intel or Crucial.

    R9 380/GTX 960 or R9 390/GTX 970 for 1080p depending on what you play, 390X or Fury for 1440p.

I've heard there are some issues with WoD as far as the 970 goes which is why im hesitant on buying it..

I have a kingston hyperx 120gb ssd laying around just not the adapters for my power supply since I can't find what happened to my power supply case. in which case I'll just buy cables. for it.

Only thing that gives improvements to FPS (in a bit way) is a new GPU. 2600k is still very relevant (with that OC) and you got more than enough memory to go with it. You could maybe get a better cooler and OC it a bit more, but that may not do much.

One could consider an SSD as an improvement, but it does nothing than improve loading times.

As to what GPU, you probably want a GTX 970 or R9 390. 390 is stronger overall, but if you want superhigh FPS at 1080p 970 is probably better for that.

Mm, it's hard to say.. Some have problems with R9 390 and WoW as well. Mostly seems to be something funky with their setup though as most go without any problems. So would assume 970 is in the same camp. Personally if you are hesitant because of those, new generation GPUs should be out out before Legion, but who knows. As is though 970 and R9 390 should both do just fine in WoW.

Won't having a 970 or even 2 in sli bottleneck my cpu? Or is the i7 2600k still able to perform with the newest gfx cards.

The 2600K is more than fine. In fact you won't notice a difference by upgrading it. No it wouldn't bottleneck.

About 1 or 2 970s, the GTX 970 lacks dx12 support and we have new cards coming soon so I wouldn't buy one myself. Go with the 390 for 1080p if you need to buy something now.

You should be fine. I wouldn't recommend SLi/Xfire given your monitor's resolution and what games you play, a single GTX 970/R9 390 should be more than enough to handle almost anything you throw at it.

Thanks for the inputs, I was planning on upgrading my gfx card beforehand to a 970 just needed some advice. as to see if my build is still relevant.

As far as the future goes, should I be looking at replacing my mobo/cpu/ram once intel releases a new gen of cpus?

No unless AMD pushes them with Zen or we see CPUs with more cores being better utilized at games.

An equivalent 4 cores with HT consumer i7 (actual 6700K) won't give you much of a difference...

It might also be an idea to get a cheaper card 950 or 380 and upgrade to a new Polaris/Pascall when they arrive.
These cards will also boost performance quite a bit.

Also, which PSU do you have?

I don't mind paying a bit extra for the performance and I'm running a corsair HX750W PSU.

What he means is that we'll receive new cards at the market soon and that those will be a significant increase over the current ones.

So I've decided to go with a gtx 980 because of its price drop in relation to the 970 and an 80 dollar difference isn't that much when getting better performance. The only problem is my current 750w PSU is using 6-pin connectors for my 560 ti would it be ok to just get 6 to 8 pin adapters and use them or buy a new PSU all together. I forgot to mention I don't have the 8 pin cables that belong to my PSU as they are in a box somewhere in California and im stationed in Georgia.

Still a bad time to buy a graphic's card. Specially from Nvidia.

Pretty much had to replace my old one and the 980 will be relevant for a long time so I'll be ok and my psu had 6+2 pin so nevermind

Actually, no, it won't. It's basically already an irrelevant card. It was pretty irrelevant when it was released. It's only about 15-20% more powerful than a 970 but was 50% more expensive. Irrelevant when it came out. None of the current nVidia series support ASync compute at the hardware level either, where as AMDs current gen does. ASync Compute is a major part of DX12, so as more DX12 games start releasing, the 980 is even less relevant.

    /\ This, OP.

That's why I said "Specially from Nvidia".
