    Exclamation Immigration Simplified

Get the picture now? The USA cannot solve the problems of global poverty by letting a ton of people in. That just makes everyone's life worse off.

Sorry mods had to do it.

OT: isn't the idea of open borders to move workers between nations. If factories leave the USA to Mexico our workers move to Mexico where they can be more productive.

Yeah, except that's not what we're doing, so there's really no point in arguing against a complete red herring.
Human progress isn't measured by industry. It's measured by the value you place on a life.

    Just, be kind.

Why would anyone want to move to Mexico, it's more fucked over there than here politically.

There might be some specific issues in the USA, but generally for the first world countries the case is that factories leave them because the workers are cheaper in Mexico, and similar countries - even if the workers are less productive.

It's funny because this supposed "brain drain" effect is actually supported by Trump and conservatives. The H1-B visa program, which takes trained, skilled workers and uses them to displace Americans for 1/3 the pay is not only heavily supported by Republicans, Donald Dump is actually moving to increase and expand the H1-B visa program so that we have more skilled and trained workers than ever. People say "OH MAN WE WANT THE SKILLED ONES NOT THE UNSKILLED ONES." The skilled ones are the ones who are taking your middle class jobs and turning them into lower class jobs, because it's more pay than they'd ever dream of in their home country.

Meanwhile the ones they're trying to keep out, the unskilled labor, are the ones who pick the fields and clean hotel rooms. Alabama tried extremely harsh anti-immigration laws and they totally failed. Their local economies collapsed when they couldn't find white laborers who even wanted to do the jobs that the immigrants did. The jobs were were "too hard" and "not worth it". So guess what Alabama did? THEY REPEALED THEIR OWN ANTI-IMMIGRATION LAW.

Haha. The video illustrates simple, inarguable points with data from the World Bank and U.S. Census Bureau, yet people still refuse to accept it. People do not want to know facts and truth. They just want to deny everything that is contrary to their world view.

It's funny because he's attacking some kind of strawman, the argument that we're trying to end world poverty by encouraging mass immigration into the US, which the only person I've seen even suggest that's a thing is... this guy.

Even if Immigration is a panacea for all economic woes and literally the BEST THING EVER! Its a short term solution to the crisis' since as has been noted by demographers, global fertility is plummeting. Even if Immigrants came with no social costs, no problems, or if we were all a nation of Tennisballs married to body pillows of Justin Trudeau, there is still the long term problem of WHERE you get immigrants as fewer and fewer countries have the surplus people for export.

Eventually we will be hoovering up populations from the most marginal, most remote, and likely must incapable of functioning in the modern world people. Soon only the inhabitants of North Sentinel Island will be left.

    What then?

I think a discussion of whether the USA should even be trying to solve the problems of global poverty would be a worthwhile starting point.

We'll have to adjust the economic system to account for the lack of economic growth. Which ultimately means consumer based market economies will probably be obsolete.

Some people say that mass immigration into the US can help reduce world poverty.
    Who are these "some people"?.
Why are we pretending the complex issue of immigration can be simplified to what "some people" say?. Why is that consideration worth exploring anyway?.

It's funny how any time there's an article or a video about "*MAJOR POLITICAL ISSUE* Simplified!" it almost always gets it horribly, horribly wrong. It's like those issues are so complicated....you can't simplify them with gumballs to make an argument.

Bryan Caplan would be a decent example of an open borders advocate whose case includes poverty mitigation.

Well the general argument I hear for amnesty and open borders is that these people are "just looking for a better life."

Why are our current immigrants on welfare at higher rates than the native population if the goal is not compassion?

That would be the preferable thing, but it seems like the thing almost nobody wants to do.

Consumer economies are widely chastised for their ill effects, why people seem so eager to keep them going is beyond me.
