GOP House introduces bill to remove the US from the United Nations

Not even sure what to say about this. I am just shocked

    Source: https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-...house-bill/193

American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2017

This bill repeals the United Nations Participation Act of 1945 and other specified related laws.

The bill requires: (1) the President to terminate U.S. membership in the United Nations (U.N.), including any organ, specialized agency, commission, or other formally affiliated body; and (2) closure of the U.S. Mission to the United Nations.

The bill prohibits: (1) the authorization of funds for the U.S. assessed or voluntary contribution to the U.N., (2) the authorization of funds for any U.S. contribution to any U.N. military or peacekeeping operation, (3) the expenditure of funds to support the participation of U.S. Armed Forces as part of any U.N. military or peacekeeping operation, (4) U.S. Armed Forces from serving under U.N. command, and (5) diplomatic immunity for U.N. officers or employees.

I doubt it will pass. They need the UN.

But it doesn't matter who we vote for. They're the same!

False equivalence numbnuts are part of the reason we're getting all this nonsense right now, including nominations.

Well over in the US of Alternate facts the right wing believed the UN has been use to take over America from outside. Yeah trust me the batshit level in America is at full crazy levels. I live in Louisiana and at a city counsel meeting where they put out plans for bike paths calling it the 2030 plan and some crazies freaked out saying it was the UN taking over.

This seems a bit like posturing -- We're going to Make America Great Again by standing on our own two feet and to hell with the United Nations.

The Bill ends up getting shot down in the process.

Then we get the Scooby Doo ending -- "We would have gotten away with it if it weren't for you meddling Democrats."

There's no reason not to be in the United Nations. All it is is a place for nations to sit down and talk things out. It has zero power. You give up nothing by being a member, and being a member is nothing but a boon for your nation's diplomatic power. Even if the U.N. passes massively stupid resolutions (like it does all the time), they have no real power. If you don't like a resolution the U.N. passes, you can ignore it. Nations do it all the time and there's pretty much no consequences for doing so. So it's not like you give up your sovereignty by being a member.

People need to learn the difference between an introduced bill and a passed law. Just because something gets introduced does not mean any further action will be taken on it. The majority of bills introduced get referred to committee and die.

This, on both sides. People often introduce bills to make a point.

A part of me suspects that this bill is just more breaking down the norms.

And the tiny fraction for whom heroic raids are currently well tuned? Too bad,so sad! With the arterial bleed of subs the fastest it's ever been, the vanity development that gives you guys your own content is no longer supportable.

The people the GOP put in to office are asinine and I doubt they understand the US's role in the UN. If they did then they would be a bit more reluctant about such a dumbass proposal.

It's no secret that the US does not really take the UN seriously nor is the UN for the for US but that's not why the US keeps ties to the UN.

The UN allows the US an extremely high amount of influence and dominance over political events throughout the world without going through more private / costly / more resistant channels.

The UN allows the US to influence rivals at the conference table instead of the situation room table. Being a permanent member of the security council, the US (and UK / France ) can check China and Russia, China and Russia can check the US under the agreed upon watchful eye and cooperation of the UN.

The UN also makes it easier for the US to in act sanctions and the assurance that terms of said sanctions are met via the UN. All without the US having to flex an aircraft carrier. And if US does it just invokes some UN nonsense to "excuse" itself. The UN is a proxy for US global influence, exiting the UN only bolsters rivals and damages the clout of the US.

So, do I get it right, Rep. Rogers, Mike D. [R-AL-3] believes that basically tossing off all US influence on the world that isn't Pentagon based, is a good trade for some tiny semblence of sovereignity (of which there would be none, having a veto in the Security Council pretty much means the US are immune to anything from the UN they don't like)?
That has to be a joke.
