I know shaming members is not a thing on this board, but just as a heads up, as a guy who raid leads a 30m regular heroic pug that grabs rando's from the group finder and does a lot of pugging, I would boot somebody who echoed this sentiment with no hesitation.
This game is a team game. I parse consistently in the top 98%, and I'm consistently one of the people helping push the group along, but I sure as shit am not gonna kill a boss by myself. Just because I'm better than somebody else doesn't mean I didn't need them along to make a kill happen. The only way to kill bosses is through cooperating, and the only way to get loot is to kill bosses. Part of that is helping one another gear up, and part of that is recognizing that without that other person helping you kill that boss, you'd have no loot at all.. But the whole selfish attitude of "its my loot, I want you to not even see it because I cant be bothered to tell you that I want that piece" to people who ask is pretty counter productive to a team game.
Not only that, but if fucks you over - you could be farming a specific boss for some piece of loot over and over and have it keep failing to drop, and somebody else waltzes in and gets it - but they don't need it. They would have been happy to give it to you, but since its the norm for people to hide loot, you never even saw it.
Again, if you need the loot in anyway, from tmog to OS, fine, sobeit, keep it and tell people you want it, but to ask to hide loot because its too hard to tell somebody you want a piece of loot that dropped for you is not only a dick move to that person, it long term hurts the game.
Lets not make this game shittier and more solo player than it already is. It isn't a hard game - the only thing it has going for it is the social cooperative aspect, and fucking that up by turning it into even more of a solo player game seems ehhhh.

So, you don't play with others is what I'm reading from this.
People ask if you need that gear. If you want to keep for yourself, tell them "sorry, no"...or simply ignore them. Seriously, what is the big deal with you that people whisper asking if you are a nice person that might be willing to give them gear that they could use?
I would counter that with your attitude, you should probably just play a single-player RPG instead. No one bothers you in those games.
its an multiplayer game for a reason we ALL need to work together to beat the Legion! if you dont want human interaction in a mmorpg you can just play witcher or the new Zelda
The whisper because it's pretty common for people to grab loot and leave the dungeon as to many it's not worth even going through the effort of putting up a loot for roll and determining who needs it. Whispering is just an attempt to grab the loot that someone else might not need before they disappear and taking the loot only to vendor it later. I don't even usually request /rolls for my loot. I'm working on clearing trash to the next boss. If they need it they can see who looted it and whisper me asking for it.
It's one thing if someone whispers you being a jackass or being extremely annoying, but if you honestly have a problem with a simple whisper from something asking "Hey man do you happen to need that [insert loot here]?" then you have some serious personal issues that you should probably work out. It's only a damn question. You can choose to either ignore it or respond.
Hell in the off chance that I'm in LFR for specific reasons and I get a piece of loot I'll typically give it the first person who whispers assuming they didn't slack off the entire time. If It's a piece of tier I'll usually find a fellow class member who carried their weight and who needs it the most. Now with that there are some very few occasions of where a piece will drop that I do happen to need, I'll check the guys gear to see if it's a clear upgrade or not, and then I'll kindly ask if he or she needs that loot or not. Either they'll throw it my way for benefit, ignore my whisper completely, or simply tell me that they do in fact need it in which case I'll congratulate them on the upgrade and go on about my way.
I'm really not seeing the problem with any of that.

I ask people for loot on my new alts but then again I give out loot to people as well (even though i need for xmog, unless it's some sweet looking chest/helm/shoulder). If someone says I need it I don't bug them at all, I find it weird when people don't respond at all... maybe they are sick and tired of the spam who knows.... but at the same time it's amusing when you get something like this
Social shaming is a pretty powerful tool. It goes both ways of course, when you get some shitbag judge who tells a rape victim that maybe she should keep her legs closed, but on the flip side, it can be used to shame douchenozzles who are racist, or who suggest that hiding loot so that they dont have to tell anybody that helped get them that loot "sorry I want to keep this." Shaming people is gonna happen no matter what, and we might as well put it to good use shaming people who are too snotty and entitled to take the time to type "sorry I want this" to somebody who helped get them a piece of loot and asked if they needed it.
Has never bothered me, I have no problem telling people "no". I'll melt it right in front of them, it is my loot to do with as I please.
That being said, most of the time I inspect the other players of my class and I'll give it to the lowest geared person. I don't let people roll for it, I decide who gets the item myself based on personality. I would give loot to a nice person with lower dps than the tanks before I would give it to an entitled asshole topping the meters.
MMO-C, home of the worst community on the internet.
I always check the persons gear before I ask them if there's any chance they don't need something. And if they did less dps than me I never ask
The only reason I'm even in LFR or normal pugs is to rack up my legendary bad luck protection, im more then happy to loot the items and give them away to people that need them. I got help when my alt was starting out too..
You know. After all this fighting against Blizzard to make them remove crappy "Need before Greed" terrible loot system from LFD/LFR, that had never been suitable for PUGs, in order to replace it with something fair and finally winning this battle back in MOP - it has taken just one xpack for them to start shifting back to it and to actually return it back in Legion. The only difference - you don't have to press "Need" button anymore - it's done automatically for you. But it's the same crap again - other players have control over "your" loot. You should know, that loot is no longer truly "personal" - bosses have "loot tables" again. So what could drop to other player - may drop to you. And when it happens - he can only beg you to give this item to him, as back in old sweet Cata times. Blame Blizzard - not players.
I don't care about Wow 11.0, if it's not solo-MMO. No half-measures - just perfect xpack.
