Your Top 5 : Saddest Fictional Deaths

So, recently I started watching the anime series RWBY. By the end of season 1, I got attached to Pyrrha Nikos. And by the end of season 3, I was made super sad. =(

So, with that said, it got me thinking of other characters I've taken a liking to in the past that didn't make it nearly as long as I had hoped they would. And what other people have as their top 5 list! I'll go from #5 to #1.

My Top 5 Saddest Fictional Deaths

    #5 : Shadow - Final Fantasy VI

Though you could speculate that perhaps he doesn't die, all evidence would appear to point to Shadow not making it out of Kefka's Tower. Leaving behind his trusty friend and ultimate badass dog Interceptor and the daughter he never knew in Relm, Shadow's already sad tale comes to a sadder end. Also he's a ninja. That's extra sad.

    #4 : Igneel - Fairy Tail

The King of Red Dragons and father figure to Natsu Dragneel, Igneel returns to assist the Fairy Tail wizards in their second encounter with the dreaded Agnalogia. However, before Igneel gets to fulfill his promise to Natsu to tell him the whole tale of his disappearance, his life is cut short by the evil dark dragon. Leaving Natsu now officially with no known family to him, his tragic end was both forseen and sad.

#3 : Pietro Maximoff - Avengers : Age of Ultron

The Marvel universe is divided between two companies, ABC and FOX. Due to this, Quicksilver (having both been an Avenger and an X-Man) sees screenplay time in both movie universes. This version is not a mutant, but is instead an "enhanced" human with super human speed. Beyond the origin of his powers, his ties to his sister Wanda (the Scarlet Witch) still remain, and the unfortunate demise at the hands of Ultron in a confiscated Quinjet left her emotionally reeling and, likewise, left you equally saddened in his quick passing. To this point, he is the only Avengers member to be killed in the movie adaptations.

    #2 : Pyrrha Nikos - RWBY

The star student of Beacon Academy, Pyrrha had it all even before her training as a Huntress...and never asked or craved the attention of being so exceptional. All she ever wanted was to make friends. And as member of team JNPR, she did just that. Her extreme fondness for her team's leader, Jeane Arc, is what makes her death exceptionally tragic. Before her final confrontation with the villain Cinder Fall, she displays her affections with a passionate kiss before shoving him into a nearby pod to be jetted to safety.

What makes this death even more tragic is the video Jeane uses to motivate himself to become even stronger. In it, she nearly admits her feelings to him, but hesitates. The now unrequited love of the sensational warrior with the "lovable loser" shall sadly never come to pass. Also she was my favorite character by the end of season 1, as I really liked her development.

And that brings me to the top.

#1 : Aerith Gainsborough - Final Fantasy VII

The light to Sepiroth's darkness, this innocent flower girl bumps into Cloud Strife and gets swept into an adventure to help save the planet from his ploy to summon the devastating Meteor to wipe the planet away of all life. Possessing the counter to Sepiroth's Black Materia, Aerith, Cloud, and their companions make it to their destination of the Forgotten Capitol, and Aerith uses her holy magic to activate the White Materia...and then finds herself tragically cut down with Sepiroth's Masamune. This is listed as one of the most tragic deaths in video game history, and as my name may entail, hit me extra hard because she was my healer! I had to use Yuffie as a healer after that. Double sadness. =*(

So, that's my list. What's yours?

Igneel dying wasn't sad. He was presumed missing/dead since forever. And the way he died...he'd have died anyway, like the rest of the dragons did.

    No order,

Greed - Full Metal Alchamist: Brotherhood

Bad guy turned good, even the very embodiment of greed eventually forms bonds with others and doesn't forget what others have done and sacrificed for him. In the end, he sacrifices himself to fight his Father.

    Tywin Lannister - ASOIAF/GoT

I honestly loved his character and actor as well. Saw the world for how it was and didn't put up with and BS. I was sad when reading the scene of his death, powerful man killed while just trying to take a shit.

    Summer - ASOIAF/GoT

Big fan of dogs. Summer was a loyal one and gave the ultimate sacrifice to save Bran and the gang.

    Sam - I Am Legend

Similar to Summer. That was a hard scene for me.

Enoch (Nucky) Thompson - Boardwalk Empire

The entire series had some great and sad deaths that could have filled this list. I'll give it to the main character though (near tied with Richard Harrow), it had it's share of irony and gave the series a good ending IMO.

Oh man, this one hit me hard. A bunch of the deaths in LOST do, but this one is the worst. I still think the episode right before that season finale, the Charlie-centered episode called "Greatest Hits" was one of the best episodes of television to ever be on air.

I can't believe no one said Macauley Culkin's character in My Girl. That was brutal.

The kid in Dead Poet's Society comes to mind too, the guy who just wanted to play Puck.

That one was not sad, it was mind-numbingly stupid. The whole point of Quicksilver is that he's way faster than bullets. Want to see how to get Quicksilver right? Watch the latest X-Men movie. (Yeah, it's lousy, but Quicksilver evacuating the school is mind-blowingly good.)

Couple more recent ones for me in film:

    Logan, in Logan
    Magneto's family in X-Men Apocalypse

    And from books:

    Waylander in the Waylander/Drenai books
Druss the Axe/Druss the Legend in the Drenai books
    Connavar in the Rigante Series

All of the above are from the author David Gemmell - check him out if you haven't already!

idk what it was, but ysera made me tear up. i wasn't even that connected to her as a character, but that death scene is just so tragically beautiful.

jiraiya, from naruto was one that hit me hard though, for real. i cried for that.

then itachi uchiha, he was sad for me too, for personal reasons.

beyond that, idk. there's definitely others, but trying to recall them on command is hard.

Just some off the top of my head in no particular order.

    1. Nanami - Suikoden 2: She was my favourite character, relentlessly upbeat and the heart and soul of the group who died protecting her brother (you). Her death makes the 'perfect' ending one of my favourite to a video game ever.

    2. Sarah (Joel's Daughter) - The Last of Us: I think this game is up there with the introduction of UP for making me care about a character in the shortest amount of time. The facial animations and voice acting in this scene really get to me.

    3. Agent 355 - Y The Last Man: Gut wrenching.

    4. Orson - Stray Bullets: pretty much the most shocking death in fiction for me personally. I still talk about it with some of my mates who read it too. Poor Orson.

    5. Setsuko - Grave of the Fireflies: I watched it as a kid and it broke my heart. I think the fact that children died in this movie made it real for me that I would die one day so it was pretty harrowing for a 6 year old.
