Realistically it would probably be 5 people in my personal life that are totally irrelevant to people on this forum, so instead I'll just mention three famous people:

    1. Sam Harris
    2. Chris Metzen
    3. Neil DeGrasse Tyson

  3. #43
    Christopher Hitchens
    Yasunori Mitsuda
    Satoshi Tajiri
    George Orwell
    My dad.

Doesn't have to be an idol, as I said, just whoever had an influence on you, simple as that.
I'm talking about the thread, as it's been conducted. Not the OP.

The 5 most common authors on my bookshelf would be:

    1. Shakespeare (he cheats by having tiny plays as individual books, so by count of individually bound things on my shelf, he wins by a landslide)
    2. JRR Tolkien (I have 3 different sets of LOTR and/or Hobbit in my house, plus at least one of everything else)
    3. Issac Asimov
    4. Neil DeGrasse Tyson
    5. Richard Dawkins

That might give you some indication of me, but it doesn't really mean those authors are the most influential to my life. Lots of others wrote more impactful work but I currently own fewer of their books, or they just weren't as prolific writers. Nietzsche deserves honorable mention in this case, because I almost have as much Nietzsche as Dawkins, but I tend to give away Nietzsche more often. In terms of influence, Nietzsche should be at the top of the list (for authors).

Obviously family and friends play a big role in influence generally.

A more interesting thread might be, "What 5 books had the most influence on your worldview?"

    1- Husband
    2 - Parents
    3 - Aunt

Authors... well I pretty much only have Tolkien, Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy in my closet right now. I don't read as often as I should or used to.

    1. My Mother
    2. James Burnham
    3. Søren Kierkegaard
    4. Sri Dharma Pravartaka Acharya
    5. Herbert Marcuse

I could say James Burnham and supplemented by Paul Gottfried, but I don't take him that seriously. Pat Buchanan is also interesting but he is also much lower on the list.

    How is that even possible?

Influence right, It's not they make you do something or you have to worship them, many people are just posting someone who had an influence on them, their thinking, maybe titillated their minds.

Maybe through their experience developed an appreciation for a certain process, and applied it.

Well your dad and brother and beat out Batman, that's impressive. Although number 5 with a question mark behind Profit is kind is hilarious.

Yeah just men, but great men in spite of their faults like anyone. Lived and died to set a challenge for society to become better. Bold men!

I read both pages and thought long and hard but nobody's name came to mind save my parents but they don't really count in my opinion as their influence is not something I actively seek but rather an inevitable part of being raised by two loving and well-adjusted Humans.

If I really think about it though there's probably one person I have been influenced by and that's a character called Haviland Tuf in one of GRRM's old books called Tuf Voyaging:
