Been hacked and ended up better off?

Just wondering if anyone has any interesting stories to tell about you or someone you know who was hacked and ended up better off in the end.

I got a co-worker and good friend of mine started playing WoW towards the end of TBC. He put a lot of time and effort into gearing, and unfortunately, his Mage was not only hacked, but stolen and transfered to another account (key loggers are a mofo eh?). While heavily a pisser, it turns out the hacker was using his mage as a banking hub for selling gold (im guessing cause he has ports and can get to buyers quickly). he recovered his character yesterday.

He also ended up with around 12 cardinal rubies, 4 primordial saronite, 124 frost emblems and a plethora of other high end items and loot.
He quickly told the GM that there must be a mistake, and that he barely had any of this pre-hacking. The GM's response: Keep it as an apology for it taking 3 weeks to recover your character.
Also, was told that if he felt like the items were hot or dirty, to just delete them.. needless to say, hes a good freind, and Im about to have a few prime saronite, a couple gems, and 2k gold waiting on me as a thank you for getting him into WoW. freakin score.

Yeah heh this has happened to a lot of people. where they get hacked and when they get their character back they end up with 10 times the gold they had and tons of boe items. lol grats to your friend i guess =p

actually, funny thing is, we both had authenticators en route in the mail. (i was hacked 2 weeks after him) got mine 2 days after i was hacked, he got his about 4 days after his hacking.

somehow we both ended up with a keylogger. we only get addons from curse.com, and we manually instal, no clue how they got on there though, as curse is supposedly "safe"....ish

The emblems and gold are part of Blizzard's new account restoration service--for every day over so long you have to wait, you get X frost emblems and Y gold.

I never download from curse, i've had an authenticator since they were brought out and use to only download addons from curse.com, since then i've been hacked twice, i've since stopped and not been hacked since.
Bottom line: Curse.com is not as safe as they would like you to believe.

blizzard doesnt remove items/gold that were gained legitimately when an account his hacked.

i got hacked and decided that i couldn't careless quit the game was never gonna come back but as so many do i did i came back and got my account un-hacked and had 12k on happy days lol

Bingo! There is your problem. Curse = hackfest. My bf downloaded a mod from there ages ago back in BC, and a day later his High Warlord was running around town, starkers, and I know good and well, my bf was at work. Sure enough, he got hacked. Fortunately, he got everything back....

including his trickey treats.... all 100 of them...... A month after Halloween.

This happened to me. I was hacked, but I froze my account before the gold for my auctioned items was given away. They also used my frost emblems to buy saronite, so I got the saronite AND the emblems back. I actually came out about 6k ahead, though I missed play time and frost emblems/JC tokens.

yeah since my hacking, I've beefed up security on my PC. It took lots of playing around with, but i have dual firewalls working in sync (comodo and symantic DoD edition) on top of hijack-this, malware bytes, and spybot search and destroy. on top of this and my authenticator, and changing my email for b.net, i think im pretty safe now.

kinda scarey though.. i mean, what if that was my bank account being keylogged? a 2 year old and my stay at home wife aren't gonna put food on the table.

I use Curse, but I also run virus and malware checks three times a day when I'm home to make sure none of my addons were made by Susan Express.

Even if you do buy an authenticator it takes ages to arrive. I waited about 1 month after paying before mine arrived. The worst thing is that I recommended to a friend that he should get 1 too.... he ordered his a few days after mine and yet it arrived 4-5 days before.

While waiting for it to come I actually thought about how annoying i'd be to get hacked before it arrived.

Now, if he had the said items prior to transferring it is understandable but if the said items would not have been awarded to the account. Just a bit of information for those whom are curious.

Im unclear as to whether these items were acquired pre-transfer. he just told me he got an email from blizz, jumped online, had his mage back, and a crap ton of stuff in his mailbox waiting on him. And while blizz does have guidelines to follow for account restoration, Im very certain that a) human error comes into play, and b) not all GMs will handle a given situation the same.

were it not for seeing it with my own eyes, i would discredit his story as well. that and having asked trade chat recently, i had about 8 random people whisper me to confirm that blizz has a "care package" with emblems and gold, and several also said that they ended up with whatever the hackers farmed, as it could have been legitly acquired. That and he waited almost 4 weeks to get his mage and gear back, so I can imagine after the several frustrated emails and tickets he sent in, he could have been compensated a bit more for his troubles.
