    eh...
    no, just plain no.

go with two GTX570s SLId instead. More bang for the buck. They're neck to neck but the 570s are cheaper.

nd if I had time I'd find 2 fine tuned 560TIs doing almost as well but I wouldn't bother with those imo.

    You can have two 590s for quad-SLI. You can't have, say, a 590 and a 570 for tri-SLI like you can pair a 6990 with a 6970 for tri-fire.

The 6970s are cheaper anywhere I look.
The test also runs at a lower resolution than 3xFullHD would.

I believe that x3 works, but not in SLI while x4 will not work.

Three/four cards? No. But four 590 GPUs on two cards, will work.

(Also, forums lagging muchomucho for anyone else?)

Obviously. I'm confused, what else would I quote? >.>

The 2GiB VRAM is worth it either way.

Ah ok, swear I saw some PC build with 3 590's and 1 Tesla ... it was for a "meteorologist"

Sounds about right. But those 590s wouldn't be in SLI. They would have to work separately, so if you wanted to play a game, only one gpu would work.

    ants to say hi

think only 2 of those are actually SLI'd though, rest are physics/cuda cores, probably use them for folding or cracking wpa.

    Here's what I'm interested in:

How many GTX 570s in SLI would outperform a single GTX 590?

At 1920x1080, two (guess, will go check). In 3*1920x1080 or similiar, three-four. Because of the lesser VRAM holding it back.

EDIT: Yea, two 570s is better in 1920x1200.

    Neither.
The GTX590 is roughly equal to GTX570 SLI, the difference is though that if you find a GTX590 (scarce supplies) you cannot OC it because currently, with the reference models, it has an unbelievable crap Power Circuitry design, overclocking it likely means you'd burn out the card.

The GTX570 doesn't have that stellar a reputation either, but since that's on the market for longer, the custom designs should have a superior power circuitry design.

The HD6990 is better in this regard, performs as well as HD6970 in Crossfire, if you clock it to the identical levels(driver bugs not withstanding, as seen above), as i have without voltage increase.

And due to my case, it doesn't actually make as much noise as reviewers have since they benched it on open air, and the Cooler Master HAF932 has the reputation of cooling better then open benching.

In reality your choices are: HD6970*2 or GTX570*2, it's ridiculously hard finding a dual GPU card atm.
My recommendation would be the HD6970*2 since they generally outperform the GTX570*2 (not by much, but they have the edge) and the scaling on the HD6XX0 series for multi-GPU is superior to the GTX5X0 series.

2 3gb GTX 580s would be best for surround gaming. 1GB of ram is good for a 1920x1080 screen, 3gb therefore is good for 3 screens. Trying to put 3 screens worth of resolution into the GTX 570s 1.25gb memory is going to cause performance issues, especially when you crank up AA/AF. Even the 2gb AMD cards would suffer a bit.

If you are putting the money into a triple monitor surround setup then Id suggest going with dual 3gb GTX 580s.
