    Going from 1280X1024 to 1680x1050 - Performance Loss

    Hello, I'm using a Monitor with 1280x1024 resolution right now and wonder how much performance I lose, if I would use a monitor with a higher res.

    I'm playing mainly WoW, maybe I will go for GW2. Setup: 4GB RAM, old I5 with 2.8GHz, GForce GTS 450

    Now I run WoW on highest settings (except Multisampling) with 60 FPS everywhere, will this work with a bigger monitor, too?

    Yeah, you'll be fine. Worst case scenario you might see 50fps occasionally, but you won't actually notice anything unless you're sitting there staring at the fps number lol

    Yes, having bigger resolution in new monitor will make huge difference in framerate.

    Let's assume for a moment that you get exactly 60fps now. Doing simple math based on the number of pixels on screen your framerate would drop to 45fps with exactly same settings, still being playable.

    With WoW you can expect to see that 33% drop, on other games that actually requires high end graphics card your low end GTS450 will be having even bigger problems when it runs out of memory bandwidth and you might see 50% fps drops.

    1280x1024 = 1310720 pixels.
    1680x1050 = 1764000 pixels.

    That means your pc will have to handle about 33% more pixels and I'm not really sure how it works but if your pc can barely handle 60fps you could see a 25% lower framerate. (Anyone more cunning feel free to correct me, this is just my thoughts).

    he said 60 fps everywhere? no mention of "barely", that's more like easily, he might actually be getting more too (well capable), but might (not is, but might) be restricting himself with v-sync

    Should be fine, for WoW at least, as your GPU has 1GB of VRAM
    Computer: Intel I7-3770k @ 4.5GHz | 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM | AMD 7970 GHz @ 1200/1600 | ASUS Z77-V PRO Mobo|

    Yeah it seems to be capped, everywhere means everywhere, I can fly through SW trade district on my high populated server at any time and if I watch my FPS numbers it will never get below 40 and then only for a second. 10 man raid=60FPS. I do 25man only rarely and had no real fps issues there.

    So except trade district a 25% drop of fps is no problem, I think in normal situations my system is capable of 100fps.

    I hope GW2 won't destroy my GPU :x

    I'd think your current setup complete overkill for 1280x1024, I wouldn't worry in the slightest.

    It does not go like that.

    i play on 1920x1080

    in wow it wont make a big difference, you can play 1920x1080 easily.

    You'll be fine, I run on a setup similar to yours (main difference being a slightly worse AMD than your i5), and I could run WoW in >60 fps most of the time after switching. I think the reason you're capped at 60 is because you keep vsync on frankly, which caps your FPS to... well, 60. Maybe you'll see a small drop, but I doubt it'll be problematic.

    For games other than WoW it goes exactly like that. WoW is bit different since CPU matters also and the scaling is not totally linear with number of pixels. But it's close enough to make a point.

    In 25-man raids 33% bigger screen might slow you down only by 20-25% because you have good CPU but bad graphics card. But when playing something like Metro2033 33% bigger screen could mean 50% slower game because you have low end graphics card which will start choking down on bigger monitors.

    Particles, polygons geometry, etc etc. is what uses most resources in current games.

    If you run wow at 1920x1200 (2 304 000 pixels) and reduce the resolution to 720x576 (414 720 pixels) you do not get 5 times more FPS.

    I have a Evga GTX 570 SC, but when im not capping my 60fps limit vSync, my card only goes 40% load, whats up with that? i also need to use dx9 because dx11 causes crashes.

    And yes, resolution really affects your fps, also depending on your AA, AF and shadow settings.

    To answer your question, the diffference in FPS from upping your resolution in WoW will be neglible.

    Oh, tell me about it. Once I got my screen a while into t11 (and it was my first widescreen ever, believe it or not), I couldn't believe that I was once content with 4:3. Looking back at screenshots I still can't believe it.
