[Movies] Is anyone else disturbed by how tiny Bane is going to be? (Batman)

The director already said that there is not going to be any size enhancement from "post venom" injection.

Not only is Tom Hardy a middle-weight by definition, he is also about 50 pounds lighter than Christian Bale. This is kind of disturbing for me, but how do the rest of you feel? From what little I have seen in the trailers, Hardy, or "Bane's" voice is barely audible whilst wearing the mask which leads me to believe that a professional wrestler could have easily filled this role.

I know that is far too late, but even Dwayne Johnson looks more hispanic than Tom Hardy does (for those of you who don't know, Bane is Brazilian), and has the acting skills to pull off this role while remaining true to the comic book aesthetic.

Well what to say? Bane is kinda of a puny little man without the venom. And do we know the story of the movie yet? Maybe the "real" Bane havnt gained his true powers yet.

But i do agree that a professional wrestler could fill the spot :P

Well for starters, Christopher Nolan isn't out to make movies that are in-line with the multiple iterations of Batman lore. In that regard, I'm rather relieved that Bane looks more "normal" because that adds to more realism -- and being more realistic is one of the finer points of the series.

The mask he is wearing is what feeds him the venom, and in and interview, Nolan said that there won't be any alterations made to Tom Hardy's size because it's not realistic to gain hundreds of pounds instantly.

Having the Bane character be a little bit bigger than he is now would not be unrealistic. Tom Hardy is an actor who has struggled to make 185 pounds for past roles. Your average high school football player dwarfs this guy. Finding an actor who was 15-30 pounds larger than Christian Bale and using basic filmography to make him look like he has enough of a size advantage and muscle development over Batman to be able to physically dominate him would not have been too hard to do. I do see your point... and guess if Nolan is trying to make this realistic, which he is, having a character rapidly grow in size instantly would not fit into the realm of reality.

This is one reason why I never got into the new movies. Don't get me wrong, they are way better than Batman Forever and the one with Arnold. But a comic book super hero isn't realistic and it looks ridiciulous when he's portrayed as something that could exist in the real world. My favorite Batman movie today is still the one by Tim Burton with Jack Nicholson as the Joker.

It isn't venom, that he carries with him, it's gonna be an anesthetic cause he's in constant pain, as opposed to the comic.

The source is on IMDB.com under the film, and spoilers, look it up if you like.

Hey ... don't get me wrong, I love the over the top cartoon batman, I love the tim burton batman, and I really really love this Batman ... even though Christian Bale can be a doucher IRL, I still love batman enough to watch anything batman that batmans batman.

I thought Heath Ledger was a horrible choice for the Joker when the casting was announced and we all know how that turned out. I'll give Nolan and Hardy the benefit of the doubt here. Ledger proved that it's not necessarily physical appearance that conveys the menace, but the performance. Hardy proved he's got the chops for this in Bronson and looked like he could kick Batman's ass in Warrior.

The only thing I'm worried about is the hype. It's getting to the point where anything less than a "Best Picture" worthy film is going to be a huge letdown, which is why I'm trying to stay away from information about the film until it's released. (Easier said than done.)

Disturbed by it, no. Disappointed though...yes. About the Joker comparison, yeah, size wasn't needed to make him a good villain, but, he was intimidating because of how twisted and demented his mind was, he was a total psychopath, capable of going from jokes to extreme violence at the drop of a hat, even to his "allies". Bane however was a villain whose physical presence was a key part of what made him fearsome and intimidating, without that, the character just isn't the same.

Actually. Hardy beefed up for the role so is bigger than Bale. He's still quite large so yeah. And acting wise he is brilliant. Its like saying why not make the Joker Nicholas Cage as he only wore paint. Heath Ledger was a tremendous actor whereas Nicholas Cage is driven by his script and sells himself out to shite movies to put it lightly.

Bane's importance to the comic books isn't actually his overwhelming size. He is supposed to be the bad Batman, essentially. He is tactical, well versed in combat, and every bit as much of a tactician as a brawler. None of these things require an unrealistic, steroid induced size. Nolan does not need to have a canonical Bane in order to portray and communicate what Bane is.

I believe Hardy is a great choice for Bane, considering he is a fantastic actor. I understand where one could think "we have to strain to understand his every word, why is a good actor needed for this role? Couldn't it just be a wrestler?" And I don't think it could. It's not always about what is said. it is how it is said, what the body language is, and how the character handles himself without words. These are all things that a good screen actor is needed for.

And if that isn't enough for ye naysayers, have a little faith in Nolan. He has made fantastic movies in the past, and I believe his knowledge and competency in this field exceeds any of our own.

This. When I heard he was joker I said, "F that movie"

Boy was I wrong. I love Tom Hardy, I'm pretty excited to see how they pull this one off.

I havent seen much about the movie, as I too am trying to stay away from it.

I think I will readily ignore this thread from now on so I don't hit any spoilers.

Oh, and the joker thing is dead on. Best actor for the part was cast. One of the brilliant performances of our time. I think Bane will be no other than amazing.

no, you friend, please never get into making movies, bane is perfect the way he is, a believable character, and not only that, but proper actor plays him... i'm glad he's not the lol 700 pound of muscles that the bane we are used to seeing is... i'm glad they actually try and make this character better than what the general public knows of him... he's fine, and for anyone that cant understand him... ssrly, check your ears, i've watched a bootleg from the prologue, and i could understand every single word... i'm sorry you have hard of hearing, but it's not realistic either for someone to speak with a clean voice when there's a mask over your face, and tube running down your throat into your lungs...

Only thing I'm disappointed about is that they didn't end up going with The Riddler, using more of a dark feel similar to the one in Brian Azzarello's "Joker" which - correct me if I'm wrong - Nolan/Ledger took from when developing the Dark Knight Joker character. I always pictured Johnny Depp (as long as did it to his full character acting potential) as an amazing dark Riddler.

That being said, yeah, it would have been nice for Bane to be bigger (perhaps using multiple actors and having him grow slowly over time - using Hardy's voice with the mask covering his face - would have worked) but I have no doubt that Hardy will play the character well enough to live up to my expectations of this movie.

I love how this Bane looks, yes Tom Hardy isn't physically the biggest but he can look physically quite the threat. I'm glad Nolan didn't try to find a massive muscle power, it wouldn't fit the movies at all and well we know what happens when you cast wrestlers. And I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to get punched by this guy

And we're talking Nolan here, a man who can actually use the camera to give you a certain emotion. I bet camera techniques combined with good lighting will make Tom Hardy bigger and more terrifying then he actually is. And since Bane is a mental genius, he has more options to let Batman piss his pants. And he will piss his pants.

Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker was fucking flawless.

OnT: I am not disturbed by it. Looking forward to the movie.

Actually what disturbs me is the stuff I've seen about Catwoman.

In regards to the voice in the trailers, of Bane (and all the other characters for that matter), Nolan is aware you can barely hear sh*t, that is why they are going back to post production to fix it
This bro quit the game but still loves the game and will be back for MoP!
