11 airliners goes missing... to be worried or not to be worried?

So some of you might have already heard that 11 airliners went missing in Libya. Coincidentally the anniversary of 911 and Bengazhi attacks approach; however, the Aviationist says theres no need to panic. http://theaviationist.com/2014/09/04...ibya-unlikely/

Ask Russia or Ukraine, they might know it.

The logistics of maintaining and fuelling a plane, having it dodge Radar stations and military bases (impossible around the Med) and actually get anywhere near its intended target make an attempt highly unlikely, and a successful attempt nigh-on impossible.

I'm not worried. The planes captured are more likely to be sold or used as ransom.

Pretty much this. Any plane flying out of Libia without correct 'credentials' will likely get shot down pretty fast

I HAVE NEWS RELEVANT TO THIS!

A few years ago, my dad working his shift at the police department got a call from homeland security about an airplane crossing canada into the US, heading for Pasco, literally 5 minutes after it crossed the border 3 fighter jets started harassing it and forced it to land in Pasco, WA. All it was was a hunting trip, and their captain never made flight plans or notified anyone he was going to cross the border and never bothered to communicate anything.

Anyways, if something as harmless as that got such a response, what do you think would happen if a huge airliner tried that :P

I guess we'll find out when it slams into something important. Since it's over there, that means nothing of importance. Carry on?

Seriously though, this should absolutely put some worry up, you don't just lose a plane, let alone 11 of the fucking things.

There are warships in the med constantly identifying and tracking every plane flying. So it wont hit anywhere important, and if it crashed in Libya would anyone even notice?

No matter when it happens, anniversary of 911 or anything else, 11 are missing, that in itself is something to worry about!

Nah, planes go missing lots. In fact most of these aircraft will be in pieces.

And as for lost aircraft, generally if they go down in the ocean, there more or less lost. Likewise several have been lost in remote locations, tho tends to be light aircraft. Lots get lost in wars, heck few were lost in Sahara, and turned up 40 years later etc.

Plus the sheer number of aircraft in many of the aircraft grave yards means that many are more or less lost in the pile.

Its odd that 11 commercial jets have gone, but with the precursor situation there in Libya, it isnt a wonder.

There worth more to these militias as $$$ in parts than for any terrorist activitys.

while this is true, it is also not very likely that they can do much more than fly over hostile (for us) occupied parts of the country. anything too risky and it'll be shot / forced down before they manage to get in range to anything of military importance, however this also means they may have to / can ram it into civil areas, wich would be a huge tragedy.

IF terrorists are behind the thefts, they are most likely selling the parts and not using the planes as weapons or transportation.

Or govt with nefarious intentions can have stand down orders to allow a corridor for the planes to get through. hmm sounds like 9/11

Probably sold under the table for funding. I would be shocked if they would be used for something as sinister as 9/11. That and they would just get obliterated before they could make it into any major air space without the proper notifications being sent prior to flight. After the attacks in the US everyone is on high alert across the world as they don't want it to happen to them.

ISIS has been threatening Europe with a 9/11, not America.
