That's just me though, gonna repeat the record and say just be honest.

Not just how you are not interested, but how what he has done has affected you both now, and how that makes you feel, complete disclosure.
so blaming the friend who wants to get romantically involved (which news flash, isn't all about sex as you say it to be) is the right thing to do?

drama always happens, doesn't mean hes/shes at fault for falling for someone emotionally.

there's no right and wrong to this.

Look, just think about he feels. He is gambling everything. He knows exactly how you are feeling, because he is feeling the exact same way. Except, he has been tormented by the fact he probably loves you. To him, he would rather move on and make everything different, than live like he has. That takes some serious balls.

Kudos to him. Sorry, that is going to end poorly for you and him(more than likely). But I can only have respect for someone that is willing to throw it away, than live in torment. It might look selfish, but it would be, also, selfish to expect him to continue to lie and live with the fact he loves you.

Honesty is the best policy in this case.

Things are going to be awkward no matter what, so might as well be honest (and decent... you can let someone down without being cruel). Attraction isn't really something a person has a lot of control over, so it's not anyone's fault. It's just one of those weird things that come with the human experience. Friendships can be complicated or scuttled without anyone doing anything wrong.

He is going to get your schlong by giving you free British candy.

Was your friend gay or straight before the incident? If he was "straight" there is a lot of things you can do for him to help him out as a friend.

You've been friends for 17 years. Just talk to him, it shouldn't be rocket science at this point!

Seriously, adults should be able to handle a simple "I am not attracted to you, but I value your friendship and enjoy spending time with you.", then accepting the conversation as something that has happened and been resolved.

If me (17 at the time, dude) and my then and current best friend (also 17 at the time, girl) could handle it, and still be best friends, it should be a minor thing indeed for someone your age.
If you add me on Steam, Skype or whatever program/client I share my info for, please write something to identify you in the "Dude/gal wants to join your club"-message. Just so I know that an actual human is on the other end :P
