Were we supposed to like Odyn?

Legion brought a lot of lore involving the Vrykul and titans. Most prevalent is no doubt Odynn and everything around him. A lot of Legion gives off the vibe that some folks at blizzard are really into Odyn and the Vrykul as well as the stuff they bring to the table. However Odyn's backstory is kind of dickish. Ultimately he whined that he didn't get his way when some dragons showed up the keepers and their creation, so went and learned shadow magic (necromancy) and enslaved someone he considered a daughter to his will forcibly, as well as numerous other women (he later does this again in the warrior questline, finding it funny to bind someone to his service forcibly).

In game he's always cheerful and boisterous. He is in many ways the gleeful warrior trope. Though it's been an annoyance to many that he just keeps on testing you despite every time saying you've proven yourself. This is especially bad for warriors who go through half a dozen tests despite from the get go (and more coming). Then you have his myriad titles and deeds. He was the greatest keeper, the "prime designate", he's somehow Thorim's father according to warrior questing and the god of storms according to monk questing. This veneration continues in 7.2 where Eitrigg and Crowley are overjoyed to be working with Odyn's champion to the point that they join Odyn's army. He appears in disguise and guides you along as a fun character with a popular voice actor then reveals who he truly is in what was likely meant to be a surprise twist that shifted love from Havi to Odyn.

But of course they never mention his terrible history in all this. There is never much done to flesh him out, he is here, he's Odyn, what more do you need? Warriors as a whole did not get a warrior order hall or warrior questline by blizzards own admission: they were so hyped on Odyn that the class instead got a Vrykul storyline, despite it being pointed out that Odyn lets a lot more than just warriors into his hall. Hell, almost all the females are simply aspiring paladins.

It all just makes me wonder if blizzard expected players to love Odyn. Its clear blizzard does, but from my own experience I've seen little else but annoyance at him.

I didn't like the Valarjar zone at all because it was blatant attempt at "HEY GUYS REMEMBER THE COOL VRYKUL ZONE SHIT IN WOTLK, LOOK, SHIT YOU LIKED, NOSTALGIA!", except they went so over the top now that just like with crapdaria, they copy pasted the entire norse mythology into the game from A-Z, to the point where it's no longer just inspired by, like Tauren are from native Americans, but literal copy paste with different names, a la marshes of crapdaria.
It was borderline acceptable with WOTLK because it was interwoven with the old gods, but even there ffs they did the whole ice giants story and goddamn everything.

I hate how much they do of this shit lately, even in Cataclysm they did it with Indiana Jones, it's like they have no more originality in them. Warcraft always put stuff from our culture in it, but since Cataclysm the blatant lack of originality is disgusting.

I thought Odyn (ODIN FFS) was retarded as was the entire Helya storyline. Especially since his human-ish form was voice by that unbearable lorewalker dipshit voice from pandaland.

this. He is flawed. He tried to do what He thinks was right not the black and white shit. His end goal is to defend Azeroth and he does that. His way of doing it might be questionable but he stil wants people to be Strong, honorable and that they are willing to keep defending azeroth even in death.

    No Tusk Club.

You mean the mythology that the Vrykul are based off? Who would have thought they would use similar mythology for reintroducing them.........

Be nice to the old man-child titan keeper, who has had so many strokes at this point that he is only capable of screeching "Valor" to voice his pain.

In a serious note I despise his character for basically the reasons state in the op, mostly because it feels like despite being a massive ass, blizzard is convinced everyone loves him. He hardly seems to have a grasp on reality and I'm convinced at this point that if blizzard remembers that this xpac was supposed to flesh out sylvanas's story too that it will end with odyn pointing at her and shouting "worthy / valor!" Again and again while she stands there ackwardly.

I don't like him at all. it's sad that in Legion we're actually forced to kill Helya who was actually the real victim in here. She was bound to Odyn's will and refused to do his bidding when he went on a childish rampage and decided to create the halls of valor and create his own army of "worthy warriors", then killed Helya who was supposed to bring him the souls of the worthy mortals. I don't know why Blizzard decided to kill Helya.

sounds more like you got issues that trancend this game.

I reckon we should have saved Helya and deposed Odyn, honestly.

I personally liked it. The VA for Havi is a well known and great VA, I like Norse mythology and the Vrykul are in game version of that culture so it goes without saying that obviously there will parallels... why reinvent the wheel when you can tell an already well established and good story from ACTUAL historical references?

Sounds like you're just looking for something to hate. Congratulations I guess?

Well hes not really done anything to defend Azeroth yet. And his people tend to be rampaging asses who dont seem to care a lick about anything other than self gratification. Infact, it would seem that Tyr's and his followers have inadvertently been a bigger aid to azeroth than Odyn and his Valajar.

Hell he goes on and on about Valor despite so far having done nothing valorous since the first war against the old gods millinia ago.

He was supposed to be a fun character. Helya was totally set up as a villain.

Yes, i know the lore. But that was the way they were portrayed in legion.

Odyn's whole shtick is a mirror, or even a parody, of the devs' love for hardcore gamers and old style gaming. If anything it's sad.

He's prove that order alone makes nothing. Helya is just in anything she believed and before she acted in disappointment. Titans are failures just as many humans. There are no brighter figures in the universe of WoW.
