Smile ‘Canada can become the singular magnet for global talent' says expert

    Came across this article.

For years, and especially recently, the way Canada deals with and accepts newcomers has given this country a feeling of pride. While other countries work on bans and build walls, we wait for immigrants at airports with teddy bears and parkas.

As a result of many global forces, immigration has become a hot topic here and abroad. Our new working paper, Immigration in Ontario: Achieving best outcomes for newcomers and the economy, is an attempt to add quantitative evidence to the growing debate on the economic contribution of immigrations to Ontario and Canada.

When done correctly, immigration policy creates a virtuous circle, wherein the government plays an active role in, and reaps the rewards of, immigrants’ success. Indeed, immigration can and must be more than just a feeling.

Our research indicates that we are leaving a substantial amount of economic growth on the table. If the hurdles immigrants face in finding employment were eliminated, or at least lowered, to unlock the vast economic potential of these newcomers, immigrant incomes would increase by up to $15.2 billion. This would be the equivalent of 2 per cent of Ontario’s GDP, creating economic prosperity, social cohesion and tax revenue that could be used to increase the quality of life for all.

In order to reach this goal, we call on Ontario to take on more economic immigrants in addition to refugees and family reunification immigrants. As usual, Ontario’s ability to control its destiny is being curtailed by the Federal government. Our province’s rate of economic immigrants is substantially lower than the national average. As many newcomers to Canada choose Ontario as their home, it is time for Ontario to have greater access to economic immigrants.

Steps must be taken to tackle the lagging employment rates found among immigrants, along with the “wage penalty” they often experience. Our research indicates that a particular focus should be placed on settling immigrants during their first five years in the country, as well as devoting additional resources to female and older immigrants.

Why should we look at the immigration file through an economic lens? Isn’t it enough to treat it as a “feel good” file?

Part of the reason Canada has been able to accept new immigrants is that it has been a positive economic bargain for current residents and citizens, as well as newcomers. Rather than get complacent by looking at the follies of other countries, we need to double our efforts at improving the economic outcomes for immigrants. This will increase the benefits for everyone.

Last week, Foreign Minister Minister Chrystia Freeland delivered a timely and historic speech in the House of Commons about Canada and our place in the world. She articulated what Canada needs to do to be a “consequential” nation in these times.

In addition, she talked about the United States’ decision to become more protectionist and isolationist as it retreats from the world. She cited climate change and international affairs as two areas where Canada would “step up” to fill the global leadership void, and at the Institute for Competitiveness and Prosperity we believe immigration is another file that should be added to this list.

Canada has done well in this area and has established a global brand for 50 years. This country can become the singular magnet for global talent over the next 10 years if we do it right.

Great argument right here. I think with the success of Germany and Canada, it could very well inspire other countries to follow this route. At the end of the day though, you can only control what's in your own borders and if other countries want to lose out on success, then that's their loss.

Yep, I knew this was a Tennisace thread even before I clicked on it. Tennisace makes even the most cartoonishly stereotypical American look bashful about his country by comparison. I bet he's got wall-to-wall Canadian flag memorabilia, a Canadian flag blanket covering his bed, Canadian flag speedos and a cabinet permanently stocked with all the maple syrup one could ever consume in one's life.

Everyone was thinking the same in the US with Trump becoming president and all, tech companies with their ultra lefty employees considered moving to Canada.

And then the employees saw the housing costs. Turns out the Chinese like the same areas the tech companies were considering.

This so called expert needs to have a conversation with those women being raped and harassed by 'newcomers' in Germany. I'm sure his blithering 'virtuous circle' bullshit would go down a real treat.

If Canada could it would already be. It isn't. Ontop of being geographically limited, it's also an inherently divided country (British, Inuit, and French).

America has it all, including volcanoes thanks to Hawaii. You like a certain type of weather? Take your pick!

The sooner Canada votes out that self-defeatist, terrorist-sympathizing, nation-traitor Trudeau the better.

There's nothing wrong with the OP loving where lives and being appreciative of this. If anything, it is badly needed when you consider the level of unhappiness, bitterness and distrust that is being seen across the world.

All Canada is doing is practicing extreme cherry-picking of refugees, only taking the most talents and leaving the truely desperate to languish elsewhere. And n doing so, they are continuing to inflict misery on poor, developing nations. By poaching the talented from those nations, they never will have a chance to develop.

If Canada truely cared about the poor of the world they'd be encouraging the talented to stay in their own countries and make them better rather than using them to prop up their own decaying economic and demographic systems.

Canada isn't alone in this though - all western nations are partaking of the plundering of poor nations. instead of stripping them of material resources as they did in colonial times, it is now the human resources they are looting.

Well, I'm a skilled worker and I would consider Canada as a place to live. But if I had to move to the US for a job that would be a major negative on my assessment of it.

Lololooooo!!! Yes, Canada is a magnet alright - but it's not a magnet for global talent.

I like Canada as much as the next guy, and I love the accents, but don't mistake your country being the only option for the best people.

Reading this reminds me of Europe 20-30 years ago.

Reality will eventually catch up with Canada too.

Every Canadian has a picture of the Queen and a cabinet stocked with an actual lifetime supply of maple syrup.

So you hand-pick all the best refugees and they still struggle to find work? At least Germany and Sweden have the excuse of language barriers and low education standards.

This is quite entertaining. As you assume he means refugees from the middle east. Perhaps he meant to target immigrants from South East Asia. Target areas with already high education and lower barriers for economic entry for them. Basically poaching talent. Hell, Bell Canada is building a massive data centre here in Winnipeg with the acquisition of MTS. They plan to use the geographic location as a hub for Canada.

Canada is indeed the best place to live. It's also one of the richest states of the USA.

    Great place. Lovely people.
