    [TV] Newsroom

    Anyone else watching this ?

I was a big fan of West Wing back in the day, and Sam Waterston really pulled off his role. (love seeing him explode)

So far its very well written, and the characters are INTELLIGENT. The humor flows naturally and isnt simply slapstick.

The opening rant was just... awesome... and it kinda sickens me to think how a public figure would be drawn and quartered if they tried to point that out IRL. "Y U HATE AMERICA ? STUPD TERORIST!"

Can't wait to see where this show's going. =)

"And they must be working, cuz I've got it."

As a broadcast journalism major and a big fan of Real News, I nearly shat myself in joy as I watched the pilot. The dialog is at times outright funny, intelligent, factual/informative, poignant, and suspenseful, in typical Aaron Sorkin fashion.

I loved the opening rant, most definitely; facts like that are sorely needed in the news cycle, and they need to, in my humble opinion, be crammed down our (and our representatives') throats every day, and for the very same reasons mentioned by Jeff Daniels' character... in the past, we always wanted to do better; today, intelligence makes people feel inferior more often than not, and so they beat their chests, belittle the intelligent, and shout like apes to make themselves feel better. The only way to really fix that is with a large dose of (forced) humility.

The back and forth between Mackenzie and Will in his office, about what kind of show she wants to make, about what she feels news should be, about what news deserves to be; the news director's mini-speech after the show airs ("You know what kiddo... in the old days, we did the news well. You know how? We just decided to."); the factual juxtaposition against real-world events (this episode takes place on April 20, 2010... the day Deepwater Horizon asplodeded)... it all makes me love what I saw.

The show, so far, says so many things about this country that absolutely needs to be said, but no one in the real world is courageous (dumb?) enough to say. If only a news show like this actually existed in this country. Dare to dream...

Newsroom does have some small issues though, like the MMS interview during the show... that never would have been allowed to happen irl, and if it did happen, the interviewee wouldn't have a job the next day. But things like that are very few and far between so far, so, even with that, it's an amazing look behind the scenes, with a decent story on top of it, backed up by amazing actors. Well worth it, imo.

"Young lady, get on your twitter account! We're doing this whole broadcast on the fly, Will doesn't have a rundown, it's the Exec Producer's first show, and she's got the whole thing in her head -- she's the only one who knows where we're going next! It's a feat that requires incredible trust between the anchor and the EP!"
"I can only use 140 characters."
    "Figure it out..."

The first episode was decent. Last week's though was just weird. One bar in downtown New York is open past 9pm? Really? The weird, completely unbelievable and wildly predictable email snafu. Dev Patel stereotypical Indian guy. I enjoy the Sorkin completely unrealistic dialogue, but it got a little silly last week with the rapid fire nature and completely dated material like the play review stuff. Its like all the dialogue content is from the 90s but Sorkin has everyone saying it in modern dialogue styles. Rumor has it the next two episodes that have been shown to media people are just bad. Hopefully it pick up in the second half of the season.

It's teetering close to becoming preachy as well as getting right in line with the things the pretend show is talking about avoiding. There are plenty of reasons to be turned off by the right, but painting them all as neanderthals with zero IQ or beauty queens or uneducated is just lazy. Starting a show off saying "we can be better" and then slowly turning it into "we can be better as long as those on the right fall in line" is boring. Show me more meat. Get into both sides playing games and hardball. When you have the benefit of hindsight, you have an opportunity to educate.

Not to mention, the stupid love triangle stuff is stale already and they either need to dump it or quit with the stop/starts.

I am really enjoying it so far. I liked the second episode because it fleshed out Will's character much more fully and I feel like it was important to see him struggle with doing what he actually knows to be the right course. Still need to watch the third one though. The show does make me sad though, because it makes me wonder why the news isn't like that in reality =/

Because they have the benefit of hindsight and can ask questions that took two years to research. Real news happens as it happens and you can't know everything when it's going on.

It's not that... it's the actually asking real questions that matter and not pandering to people.

...again though. They're asking real questions of things that happened two years ago. Not to mention, a lot of the things that people are all fired up about and asking "why didn't people ask that?!?!?!". . .actually were asked. We're just sheltered in our own worlds that we think everyone else's are similar. There isn't a single person here (or that I or probably you know) that could claim that they're as aware and educated about current events and policies as a fully staffed news room. We have full-time jobs and families that prevent us from doing so. The information is out there. . .the ones to blame are you and I for not searching it out.

The constant rapid fire dialogue turns me off and Olivia Munn is not a good actress. I also don't believe Jeff Daniels character, I can't seem to invest into it. I can tell it's Jeff Daniels who has memorized a script, he did better acting in Dumb and Dumber.

I like it, wish it really didn't have these romance sidstories, but I do like it. It's a great cast (minus Oliva Munn). It's more entertaining, and believable, than the real news.
