In search for a new PSU.

I'm looking for a new PSU, I have one that recently sparked for some reason and now it's dead. (At least, I think it's the PSU. There's a burned capacitor in it, and a burn marking on the outlet plug.)

It's a fairly older system (2009 Hardware, I think. Maybe 2008.), and wondering if I could down size its wattage for a cheaper replacement. As to how much lower, I have no clue; Thus' why I am here.

It was a Corsair 650w PSU that went poof.

    1st Gen i7 (Unsure exactly what model, 860, 920, or 960...)
    EVGA ATI 5770
    MSI P55-GD80
    2 Harddrives (Both WD)
    8Gb of RAM (4x 2Gb).
Case is a standard ATX mid-tower, Cooler Master. (Storm Scout Red?)

What's your budget, and do you plan to upgrade in the near future?
    i7-4770k - GTX 780 Ti - 16GB DDR3 Ripjaws - (2) HyperX 120s / Vertex 3 120
    ASRock Extreme3 - Sennheiser Momentums - Xonar DG - EVGA Supernova 650G - Corsair H80i

Not with this old machine, no. Trying to keep it alive, not expecting to replace it soon either. (And can't for awhile.)

Without Holiday sales, probably $70 USD at most.

(It's no longer semi modular, it's full)

Would 520w really be enough for that build? Seems a bit low in my loopy head.

Well, let me clarify more details a bit...
I'm like, 99% sure that it is the PSU that blew. The black marks on it, and the smell seems to be coming from it.

That, and the motherboard seems fine, visually.

It's enough unless you plan on SLI/Crossfiring any time soon.

And you don't want to smell that.

Would lowering that to 500w (From the 520w) make at all a difference? ($15 cheaper, $20 cheaper without the Holiday sale.)

  8. #8
Depends on what that 500W is
If you must insist on using a non-sanctioned sitting apparatus, please consider the tensile strength
of the materials present in the object in question in comparison to your own mass volumetric density.

In other words, stop breaking shit with your fat ass.

    Cooler Master, Thermaltake and Corsair.

Ehh I would stick with the Seasonic as those 3's offerings in the ~500W range are a bit iffy. What ones were you looking at exactly?

NCIX has some amazing deals going on for EVGA units.

Never heard of NCIX, and I was not aware EVGA made power supplies.

I can't recommend Seasonic highly enough. I have a seasonic platinum 7xx which is completely silent and works great.
It's expensive though and pnly worth it if you'll also use it in a future computer.
Otherwise I recommend a gold rated psu from a known brand name such as corsair, do not take a noname unless it was vetted by a serious tester. In France for example you have a distributor selling seasonic psu under its own name for much less than Seasonic.
At the opposite you do have dangerous 'PSU' that can destroy computers and or start a fire.

If you don't mind non modular and you don't mind a mail in rebate:

    http://pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-pow...ply-p1550sxxb9

really cheap right now. Seasonic OEM.

I would personally avoid the 2 you linked as there are better choices for competitive pricing.

And yes, EVGA SuperNOVA series are generally good PSUs:

Here's the one that glo was probably referring to. It's semi modular.
    | Fractal Design Define R5 White | Intel i7-4790K CPU | Corsair H100i Cooler | 16GB G.Skill Ripsaws X 1600Mhz |
    | MSI Gaming 6G GTX 980ti | Samsung 850 Pro 256GB SSD | Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD | Seagate Barracuda 3TB HDD |

Yeah, rabate I don't mind. I think I'm going to go with this one though, After rebate, it's $25.

Unfortunately, that's out of my price range.

    Hmm...
    What about Corsair CX600?

You had a PSU fail on you and you wanna skimp now to save a few bucks? Makes no sense.

The EVGA unit you just linked is OK.

    I would go with this:

    SeaSonic M12II 620 $25 off, $50 total.

This is alright too, after rebate, would be my second choice:

EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular $40 after rebate.

Issue is, I have a hard $50. $70 at the absolute highest. I don't really have the extra cash just to take advantage of the rebate to make it equal to $50.

750w is overkill for me, wasted power.

I'm looking to pay cheap because it's on a older 2008 or 2009 system of parts to replace a Corsair 650TX.

    Why does it matter if it's a 750W if it's well-priced and is a good-quality unit?
