One thing I feel ruined WoW

If theres one thing thats always bothered me about WoW is what Blizzard did with mounts. They used to be epic beasts you could ride, nothing flash or nothing unrealistic (in terms of WoW) but then they added all those fire mounts and shit. It's a really small thing, but it has kinda ruined a lot of fantasy in the game for me. Anyone agree or am I insane

Haven't really thought about it. I don't see any players around me anymore, so that might be the reason, but no. I don't really think it contributed to anything significantly.

Yea, nothing ruins fantasy more than riding on the back of a dragon...a pinto pony is where the the good stuff is at.

Charging into battle on your raptors/wolves was a lot cooler than riding in on your fire dragons and crazy ass mooses

    You want realism in fantasy?
"In life, I was raised to hate the undead. Trained to destroy them. When I became Forsaken, I hated myself most of all. But now I see it is the Alliance that fosters this malice. The human kingdoms shun their former brothers and sisters because we remind them what's lurking beneath the facade of flesh. It's time to end their cycle of hatred. The Alliance deserves to fall." - Lilian Voss

A dragon, fair enough, but these fire dragons and shit is about OTT

    I don't like big mounts.

I get you, OP. I think back to when we just had the racial mounts, a couple of class mounts and a the basic flying mounts and netherdrakes... it just felt more coherent and in keeping with the fantasy world we were in. I'm not asking for realism in fantasy, but at least have the elements in that fantasy world feel like they belong. I guess that's somewhat the line of thinking when the devs talk about "class fantasy" - a sense of belonging.

That said, there have been some great mounts released since then, and I'm sure everyone's favorite is different, but yeah; just feels like a freak parade with all the variety. Can't really go back now, though.

wait what. Though it has to be said if we assume "wow unrealistic" even exists, that the game has evolved. e.g. Gnome and Goblin technology is now to the point of feeling partly like a science fiction game, the early wow content was way more archaic in art.

Interesting point. These days mounts are handed out like candy so that may have something to do with it. There can't be a unique model anymore since they have to recolor it 10x so everyone can get one.

On the mount front I quit the game back near the end of BC and back then you were lucky to have epic flying at all yet alone anything besides the basic mount the unique stuff was extremely rare.

I come back at the very end of cata right before mop launches and you're just tripping over dragons n shit. Kind of bummed me out that it made those unique mounts fairly meaningless since everyone was riding them.
..and so he left, with terrible power in shaking hands.

I agree, mounts have gone pretty overboard. It's all cheap glowy/flashy stuff that kills immersion for me.

And yes, fantasy must be conservative sometimes, and be grounded in some reality. Otherwise it would just be a pile of generic nonsense..

Well. I guess people will come up with any silliest, most random and coming-from-nowhere kind of BS by now, and whine about it.

    You've completely missed his point.

Yeah a lot of the immersion is gone from WoW. But I don't think it would have made much sense for us to remain basic adventurers over 11 years. Even if I do miss the old days of being a lowly adventurer on his first quest. What kinda bothers me, is seeing lowly level 30s on Invincible. I mean... it should at least have a level threshold on it. Damn

Yeah LOTR would have been so much better if Gandalf basically did everything for everyone ontop of a flaming eagle.

I guess people will come into threads with the silliest, most random, self involved BS, and then whine about something that's a basic nerd discussion.

My favorite mounts have been and probably always will be bears, and I hope the current existing mounts get updated in legion. There's nothing better than a dwarf riding a massive bear into battle.

I vote insane. The feeling, that something this minor has ruined WoW is not sound.

I guess that depends on how you look at it, the story behind the actual mount and where it comes from. Is it a fire dragon from the ingame shop? Yea....I get that it isn't cool. Is it the Mimiron's head from Ulduar? Yea thats definitely cooler.

There's nothing more depressing than people who try insert tolkein fantasy into Warcraft which was always sold as high fantasy, or cartoon fantasy. Gnomes, Siegetanks, Plane versions of Gyrocopters from the Ironforge Airstrip and Loch Modan, Mechanostriders, Finkle's Lava Dredger, these are all things that have been in the game since vanilla.

Trying to insert realism in WoW is like complaining that you can't fly starships to other worlds in steampunk game, you're missing the point.
Mistweaver Tax noun 1. The effect of both high mana costs, and lack of utility, coupled with requiring specific talent combinations to compete with other healers, while still not being able to compete with toolkits said healers have baseline in any competitive area.

    Yeah, Warcraft 1,2,3, Vanilla disagree.

    Even TBC was low-key.
