Trump says he’d consider overturning same-sex marriage in shock U-turn

In a surprise U-turn, Republican Presidential hopeful Donald Trump has ditched his support for same-sex marriage and now says he would consider overturning it.
The billionaire reality TV star-turned-politician is currently leading the Republican Presidential race.
He declared last summer that opposing same-sex marriage is a “dead issue” and admitted to attending a “great” same-sex wedding himself.
He said at the time: “Some people have hopes of passing amendments, but it’s not going to happen… Anybody that’s making that an issue is doing it for political reasons. The Supreme Court ruled on it.”
But in a Fox News interview today, Trump appears to have completely reversed his stance – signalling support for a plan mooted by rival Marco Rubio, to appoint new ultra-conservative Supreme Court justices and then demand a do-over.
Trump said when asked about same-sex marriage: “It has been ruled upon, it has been there.
“[But] if I’m elected I would be very strong in putting certain judges on the bench that maybe could change things.
“At some point they have to get back down to business, but there’s no question about it, I wish it was done by the state.

“I disagree with the Supreme Court from the standpoint it should be a states’ rights issue. And that’s the way it should have been ruled on, not the way they did it. I can see changes coming down the line, frankly.”
When host Chris Wallace asked point-blank whether he would appoint new justices in order to overturn the ruling, Trump said: “I would strongly consider that, yes.”

The move is a blow to gay Republicans, given until now Trump was the party’s only prominent candidate who doesn’t oppose equal marriage.
He has unclear stances on a number of other LGBT issues – and it is alleged he assured anti-gay evangelical lobbyists that he would not use a Presidential veto to block a law to permit discrimination against married gay people.
Mr Trump recently revealed he’s getting speechwriting assistance from a “great” pastor who compared gay people to paedophiles.
Can I just say.. surprise? This is really a suprise to anyone? Trump is the biggest celebrity tv whore in the news right now, he'd sleep with anyone to win power and money, so appealing to bigots really doesn't come off as a surprise.

I'm shocked someone trying to garner republican votes would announce they're against same-sex marriage.

What's next, he'll say he's against gun control!?

So his goal is to win the candidacy but lose the presidency. Surely he knows this will not help him on the general election, AT ALL, I don't understand why he would do this since he was already leading the republican primaries by a comfortable margin without appearing religious.

The subtle call-out is my favorite part of this thread. Also this isn't a surprise at all, and I'm sure the people who harp on democrats for changing stances on things will have no problem with him doing it.

I think the bigger issue is how he gains nothing from this but loses a lot.

How exactly would a President overturn such a thing? Even if the Republicans passed a bill in Congress and got it to his desk to sign, the Judicial branch would get it frozen in the blink of an eye and probably obliterate it. I say leave the definition of marriage alone. It's been usurped by government enough already.

It's funny because he thinks a President can "overturn" a Supreme Court ruling.
It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the beans of Java that thoughts acquire speed, the hands acquire shakes, the shakes become a warning.

Surprise? I never knew he was for it.

God the media is stretching hard. It's like saying a republican is anti abortion in a shocking twist.

Was my first thought, but the article makes it clear when you read it that the goal is to appoint extremely biased judges who will rule on bias rather than law. It's widely believed that the upcoming president will get to appoint several supreme court judges.

What is he going to do, overturn the supreme court? It doesn't seem like 'I'll consider it' is much of a position, but its also the safe thing to say if he doesn't want to give anyone ammo against him in the primaries. It is also debatable whether opposition to same sex marriage makes somebody a bigot, many people would make the argument that the government should not have the power to legally recognize any type of marriage.

So Trump is being deliberately non-committal on an issue in order to pacify his voterbase by saying he'd consider doing something, not that he'd do it...big wow, politicians fudge answers all the time.

I'd also like to point out.. the second picture, I can't help laughing.

But at the same time, why would someone want to delegitimize their article by posting shit like that with it.

Can you explain how he would overturn the supreme court on this one? You should also keep in mind that the Clintons really hurt gay rights in the 90s with policies like 'don't ask don't tell' and the defense of marriage act.

Well, good thing he will likely be running against the people who set gay rights back a decade.

Well, good thing he will likely be running against the people who set gay rights back a decade.
He can't. That was my point.

But the media states he will most definitely do that cause they clearly hate him.

And even if he could. Would anyone be shocked if he tried?

    Real talk

Who here would be shocked to see a republican try to repeal the right for gays to marry?

Nah he won't, he knows it's a waste of time to try to change it back

Our government is so screwed up right now along with the court systems. I wouldn't put it past him to try and actually succeed in this endeavor if he becomes president. Oh well, this country is going to hell in a hand basket anyway, we are all just along for the ride. Regardless of who's picked, nothing will truly ever be fixed. Do I believe our country can be fixed? Absolutely. Sadly, not during 1 presidency - regardless who is elected.

And to add, I'm not talking about gay marriages being fixed, I don't care if they are married or not. If you marry your lover, great, if you don't, then what business is that of mine? I certainly think there are a ton more pressing issues to attend to than overturning (and wasting more tax dollars) on something that was already fought for and won.
