WoW is too big for me to play.

So I was installing the patch and I found that my computer had literally run out of memory. I've deleted every last thing I can spare and I'm still running out of space. So I ask you people who know about computers, would it be possible to install wow on a 500gb external hard drive and play it? If not, is there anything in the WoW folder that one can delete?

I've talked to a mod and they've agreed to ban anyone who says something along the lines of "lol get a new computer".

Yes it is possible to install it on an external drive and play from there. U can even move your current installation there without having to reinstall from scratch.

Besides that look in the updates folder and delete the old patch update files if there are any.

Well, that is the solution. If your hardrive is... 50gb, then you need a new one. Should only cost a few hundred at most.

Yea you can. Afaik (I don't know a lot about comps) WoW doesn't have anything mandatory stuffs in registry, so you can just copy+paste it anywhere and it will work. I'd like to add that I've done it myself :P

It would be possible, but im not sure about how much reading speed youd need on the disk to make it not lagg, but its probably gonna work just fine

    K thanks.

or you could just take your stuff from your drive and put it on the external? just as a suggestion in case you have a rather large hdd, but full.

It'll work, no doubt, but if you're going to put it on a USB harddrive, speed will be terrible.

Unless you happen to have USB 3.0. But I doubt that.

Nah, it won't be THAT slow..

But, if you have an external HDD to move WoW on, why can't you move the other files on it? (that you can't/don't want to delete)

    Define speed.

Speed will be normal unless you put it on some kind of huge Flashdrive, yes those with 3-5Mbps would not be sufficient.
On the other hand I have external USB drive 1TB capacity and when I'm copying stuff it goes usually somewhere between 30 to 50 Mbps and that's really enough.
It's also dependant on your disk's cache.
And theoretical speed of USB 2.0 is like 480Mbps it's not the USB you're limited by (oh yeah and USB 3.0 max theoretical speed is 5 Gbps, GL reaching that)...

"Dude, why are you dead again?" "Because I'm raid-leading, doh..."

So I have a 50GB partition just for WoW, you guys reckon it's gonna be enough? :S

I'm always running wow from my 2.5" 320gb external hard drive and I can assure you there is nothing wrong with the speed, wow runs perfectly fine.

It should run fine on any external hard drive, but you probably shouldn't try to run it from an USB stick of course.

When did I say anything about transferrates? I said speed will be terrible, as in, access times. Furthermore, USB data transfer takes a percentage of CPU power, leaving less for the game to use.

Maybe, but I don't have a high end system at all but haven't experienced any trouble or slowness using my external hdd(and no I don't have it connected with a SATA cable).

I used to know a guy that played from an external HDD. He used to be able to fiddle with the wire and bug the game, use mounts inside, get onto places others couldn't, etc.

I wonder what happened to him

Lol, get a... just kiddin'. An external hard-drive will work just fine if your computer can handle it going through USB etc, or maybe faster cables like firewire (ppl say it's faster, i never used it)... Me myself, i got 2 hard-drives in my computer already, first one for documents, normal programs, random crap, second one for movies, games (big part goes to wow actually) and music. Works fine for me so far.

You should beable to play it on external HDD tho you can get 500gb HDDs for as little as £30...
