    The ads.. out of control?

Now I know ad blocker exists etc, but I can never configure it to not block all sorts of things I WANT to see. Plus ads aren't always terrible, but sometimes I have a few pages open and I'll hear crazy noise, look around the room, then find it's my speakers, then I have to go through searching every tab or just closing them to make it go away, and it's usually MMO-Champ.

Plus that huge Star Wars one on the front page is a bit of ridiculous..

Probably won't be addressed but meh...

Yeah that popup ad for SWTOR is pretty damn annoying.

Ya no shit. Every 5min or when you reload a page is getting out of hand.

The reason for these adds are a source of revenue for this site. Advertising targeted at a MMO audience for an MMO makes good business sense.

This has been addressed just yesterday btw:

So yes, I'm not one to complain about a free service and usually keep my mouth shut on ads, but thought I'd chime in.

I can bear with every form of internet advertising except for overlays, ESPECIALLY ones with auto-playing video/audio content. That is enough to make me dump a site and find an alternative, as I have done many times, mostly because it's not safe to browse from work any more once a site reaches that point.

AdBlock for Google Chrome works great with MMO-Champion right out of the box. Doesn't block any actual content that I've found.

Regardless, those adds of the front page don't look that bad from the screenshot. And if ads are auto-playing sound you can report them, although I do realize that's a bit of a pain. The point is that they're not supposed to do that, unlike many other sites that are a-ok with that stuff (and pop-ups, pop-unders, expanding/floating ads, etc etc).

I've never seen an ad on this site in the several years I've been reading it.

Try grabbing an ads-blocking HOSTS file and you should be set.

Can we just not have the ones with sound? You could line the sides and fill the top and bottom with ads for all I care I just don't want ads that auto play sounds.

Definitely. Adblocker addons are fine and all, but an ad-blocking hosts file will get rid of them all. I haven't even seen an ad on Youtube in a long time.

Ads with auto-play sound aren't supposed to happen and can be reported as bad ads.
They can tell their ad network not to send auto-play ads, but sometimes it still happens.

I don't like blocking adds on pages i frequent but that overlay pop up of that over hyped crap star wars game made me wanna delete the bookmark for MMO champ.

The audio ones are a known issue. All we can do is report them. From the thread where you're supposed to be reporting these ads to:

We sent yet another request today, so hopefully some good stuff will happen. :/

It sucks that it's indirect, but at least we don't (usually) have to worry about any of that ourselves.

And to everyone feeling the need to gloat about using adblock:

I whitelist this site to give you guys support, but these are damn annoying, hehe.

Ads are fine, place them all over the place. However, when there are overlays and auto-playing ones, you're asking for them to be blocked.

The ads keep the place running, don't go overboard and block everything, guys.

Give us non-intrusive ads and I'll definitely support the site by allowing them all.

That was valid before mmo-champion was bought by curse. I was more than happy (as I'm sure many others were as well), to white list mmo-champion from adblock when the ads consisted of one non-obnoxious banner and one non-obnoxious block ad. Since the Curse take over the ads take away from the browsing experience. Furthermore Curse has other means of revenue.

The SWTOR ad campaign was a mini-screw up, it shouldn't have lasted that long and the capping (amount of times you see the ad in a day) didn't work properly. It was way more aggressive than intended.

Bla bla bla, we had more ads slots under MLG and tournament streams embedded on the front page, and when I was still running the site by myself I screwed up on ads a couple of times, you can't visit a site every day and just expect everything to be happy puppy all the time.

Yea noise making ads that are part of the page are worse then pop-up spam. It's insane how out of control websites are letting them become
