What have you always wanted to be?

Ever since you were a little kid, what career path have you always wanted to take? Fireman? Police officer? Dancer?

1. What have you always wanted to be since you were a little kid?

2. Did you achieve that goal?

3. Is it as enjoyable as you originally thought it would be?

I'll go ahead and answer the questions first.

1. When I was younger, I always saw myself becoming a famous baseball player. How awesome would that have been? As I grew older, I kind of started pushing away the idea of fame and fortune, but rather began focusing on some career that I could help or protect people in. I now feel like my life calling is working for the FBI or DEA as a K-9 Unit, considering I love dogs (they truly are man's best friend), and that a career path where I get to serve and protect would bring a ton of satisfaction to me.

2. I have yet to achieve my goal. =( I can't become an Special Agent in the FBI until I reach the age of 23. I am only 19 now, but it just gives me more time to go through college and get a degree in Crime and Criminology.

3. I hope it will be!

1. When I was a kid, I always wanted to be a game programmer. I followed my dreams all the way up through college.

2. When I got married and had a child, I realized that my career path wasn't the most conducive for family life and so I am just a regular programmer.

3. I'm quite happy with my decision. Ironically, as I was exiting college, one of my professors was going to hook me up with a job with SOE in Tuscon, AZ. We can see now that my decision to not take up his offer was a good one. (Hint: SOE closed 3 game studios last week, one of which was the Tuscon, AZ office)

I bagged the Dungeon Helper part, but didn't quite manage to grow the wings.
I'm still hopeful, it's an on-going project!

1) I always wanted to be an archeologiest. I loved Dinosaurs for a long time.
2) Nope. I grew up and had a lot of stuff happen to me. Maybe I'd be "happy" if I had stuck to that dream from my childhood. The one I tried to follow fell on its face.

I wanted to be an archaeologist as well, and decided to apply to archaeologist college.
Turns out, it's the least useful profession out there.

Out of the hundreds/thousands of people persuing a career is Archaeology,
only 600 total in the entire country have a steady job in the field at the moment.
The others are "Shovels for hire".

Not a great choice of career.

That would likely be a branch of paleontology Archeology specifically deals with humans.

Nothing. When I was a little kid, I had kid dreams like being a race car driver
or something.

In High School I was CONVINCED I was going to be a rock star. lol

I didn't have any direction for what I wanted to be until my
first year in college.

2. Did you achieve that goal?

Based on deciding what I wanted to do in college, yes. I've been in the computer industry for
30 years come this summer. I've gone from being a field service tech to running the largest
single testing lab in my company. Took two company mergers, Compaq buying DEC, then
HP buying Compaq, being laid off and a short term contracting job to get to the company
I work at now, where I've been for 5 years.

3. Is it as enjoyable as you originally thought it would be?

Definitely. I not only have manager-ish duties (for the lab, not people) but I'm also
hands on in testing. Plus I work on very cool media based stuff used in both broadcast
news and film production and post production.

When I was a little kid I wanted to be a Pokemon Trainer.

I don't think that's going to happen any time soon.
