Patch 4.1 Preview -- Dungeon Finder: Call to Arms

In patch 4.1 we'll be introducing Dungeon Finder: Call to Arms, a new system intended to lower queue times. Call to Arms will automatically detect which class role is currently the least represented in the queue, and offer them additional rewards for entering the Dungeon Finder queue and completing a random level-85 Heroic dungeon.

Any time the Dungeon Finder queue is longer than a few minutes for level-85 Heroics, the Call to Arms system kicks in and determines which role is the least represented. In the case of tanking being the least represented role, the "Call to Arms: Tanks" icon will display in the Dungeon Finder UI menu where class roles are selected, and will also display on the UI when the queue pops and you are selected to enter a dungeon. Regardless of your role, you'll always be able to see which role currently has been Called to Arms, if any.

Call to Arms is meant to lower wait times by offering additional rewards for queuing as the currently least represented role. To be eligible for the additional rewards you must solo queue for a random level-85 Heroic in the role that is currently being Called to Arms, and complete the dungeon by killing the final boss. Every time you hit these requirements (there is no daily limit) you'll receive a goodie bag that will contain some gold, a chance at a rare gem, a chance at a flask/elixir (determined by spec), a good chance of receiving a non-combat pet (including cross faction pets), and a very rare chance at receiving a mount. The pets offered come from a wide variety of sources, and include companions like the Razzashi Hatchling, Cockatiel, and Tiny Sporebat, but the mounts are those specifically only available through dungeons (not raids), like the Reins of the Raven Lord from Sethekk Halls, Swift White Hawkstrider from Magister's Terrace, and Deathcharger's Reins from Stratholme.

This system is meant to address the unacceptable queue times currently being experienced by those that queue for the DPS role at max level. The long queue times are, of course, caused by a very simple lack of representation in the Dungeon Finder by tanks, and to some extent healers. We don't feel the tanking and healing roles have any inherent issues that are causing the representation disparity, except that fulfilling them carries more responsibility. Understandably, players prefer to take on that responsibility in more organized situations than what the Dungeon Finder offers, but perhaps we can bribe them a little. While this system gives tanks and healers something extra, the incentive is being provided so that we can help players in the DPS role get into more dungeons, get better gear, and continue progressing.

While the gold, gems, flasks, and elixirs are OK incentives, we knew we needed something more substantial. We had briefly considered Valor Points and epics, but decided that wouldn't be working toward the goal of helping DPS players progress, and ultimately wouldn't keep tanks and healers in the Dungeon Finder system for very long. We settled on pets and dungeon-found mounts as they’re cosmetic/achievement items that players tend to try to get on their own, so why not change that up and offer them a chance to get some of those elusive pets and mounts in a way that also helps other players? Even if they don't get a pet or mount, or get one they already have, the gold and other goodies still feel rewarding enough that it won't feel like a waste of effort.

We think it's a pretty solid incentive to get tanks and healers queuing, give max-level players another way to collect the pets and mounts they so desire, and above all, to improve wait times for DPS players sitting in queues. In the case of lower level dungeons, it's actually not uncommon for DPS to be the least represented role, and so if this new system works out and we're pleased with the results, we may consider applying this same mechanic to lower level dungeons as well.

Btw, you still wipe in dungeons? Really? Cause all I see are 57 pages of throwin sh*t from tanks to dps to healer to dps to tanks to healers to dps about who wiped you.

Well... thanks to the massive amount of QQ.. a solution has been found..Now a solution has been found. Commence the QQ. "Blah blah i dont like this anymore, *cries*".. you see alot of these solutions are brought in because of the 1145 and so on comments that people find the time to do..other than stand in orgrimmar, in the same spot for hours and hours, oh wait and dungeon ques are normally how long? 30 mins max, i'm off the fence on this one i love the idea of rewards for signing as a tank or healer as we tend to get all the shit in Hc's anyway. And as for the dps who "want" these mounts there is always a 30 mins que time you could skip and pop along to Magister's terrace?... Enjoy.

What is wrong with you people? DPS aren't losing anything, infact they're gaining reasonable que times. If they had given DPS an equivalent bonus then that would not help the issue at all. All this will do is encourage hybrid classes to keep a set of gear for healing/tanking so they can man up and do their daily heroic quicker with more bonuses, something I did when I still needed VP purely for the lower queues. They aren't gaining any bonus in gear, just a bit of extra gold, unlikely to be a substantial gain, and cosmetic items.

As for pures, enjoy your lower queue times. Too much unwarranted QQ from pures, at least in raids you don't have trouble getting spots. I don't see Feral cats being taken to raids over Rogues, or elemental shaman being taken instead of warlocks/mages/hunters.

People getting more mounts so what? Those who wants them are surely already running the shit they need, people who dont really care can get them but they probably wont do like you do and show them for epeen in the cities so you can probably have your epeen for yourself

My main is a protwarrior with absolutely no need for what a heroic can provide. My 2 cents:

When adding 3x[luck of the draw] for joining random hc's I thought: "Cool. Then the instance will be quicker with less problems. Think I'll start queueing. It's an ok amount of gold rewarded and you can never get enough points". I know there are other ways of getting gold, but i've never been a fan of any.

That made me queue 2 times for a random. A lot of people still has no clue what they're doing, and I was back to doing this with Guildies instead.

With this feature, my first thought was "Great! I'm not that much of a mount/pet-collector, but still. Never say no to a bag of goods!". Will probably try it one or two times, just to see. But I don't think it will help me help out on the long waittime. The reason I do anything in wow is to improve my char. When i can't do that in a HC I will not do a HC. Simple as that.

One thing I'm sure of, as many already pointed out: There will be a lot of players in dps/pvp-gear rolling as tanks. Not having a clue of what to do.

Maybe a simple "required itemlevel in bank" isn't enough anymore. Make it atleast a "3-digits" or something.

If an item has str. stam. crit and haste it could look like 346-316-287 (dps-tank-heal).
If an item has str. stam. hit and mastery could have 346-346-287 (dps-tank-heal).

Don't know how low blues go (cool mix of words^^), but it doesnt make any difference. Wearing too many "false" items will not let you join as a tank/healer in a random HC.

Weird...I never had an Occ group drop after the goodie bag was implemented.

So, can we get these mounts as Bind on Account, so I can use my alt that can tank, and send the reward to the one that I really care about having these mounts, that CAN'T tank or heal?

If we are both wanting to go to Austraila it's not fair.

DPS do not have that luxury of having a designated healer.
In current cata raids, the requirements are tight enough that if that DPS dies, you won't make the kill often enough.
First of all, you seem to have trouble reading what I write.
Chances are that's as much my mistake for not being clear as being yours for reading wrong.

But there is not one time I can think of in tier 11 normal raids where a dps does not get plenty of time to move or react. Maybe with the exception of the interrupters because of mandatory interrupts and reaction time.
Even so, the reward here is for heroics.

For the rest I do agree with you. We can reroll if it is needed, but does that solve the problem you think?
I want to help now too, I always tank for any friend or guildy who asks. But will I volunteer for the shear horror the average pug group is without motivation? not bloody likely. I'd rather wait for someone to need me in a healer or DPS role. Pugs suck because of DPS attitude for me. I can imagine if you play a DPS a lot you meet as many bad tanks as I meet bad DPS but when I heal a heroic I almost never see the bad tanks.

And yes, I think if the average player took the time to tank or heal and learn the game from another angle we would have a lot less problems and queue's would certainly not be one of them.

    Really nice idea IMO.
As if DPSers could really be under represented in a system that consists in 3 DPS, 1 Tank, 1 Healer.

I could see the queue needing healers, but tanks? Nope lol. As we progress towards faster and faster runs (some dungeons alread have skippable bosses, bringing raid geared tanks and healers will only speed it up), they're back in the queue and off again. They will never sit there waiting for DPSers.

I am now rather upset with Blizzard. : /. It's a lazy solution and a simple bandage to a simple problem: It's not that there aren't enough tanks, it's that there aren't enough classes that CAN tank. Like the aesthetics of being a Shaman, but want to tank? Too bad. "Hybridizing" all the pure classes, though it would admittedly be a bitch to balance, would help to solve this problem a lot.
I feel the same way. My main is a hunter and I would happily tank if we had a spec to do it with. Not everyone wants to get on an alt and tank. They want to play their "main" toon. That's what needs to change. Give every class a spec so they can tank (or heal). We don't need pure classes anymore. It doesn't work. Why shouldn't my hunter have the same opportunity to get these "gifts"?

Don't get me wrong people should play the role they like BUT at the same time if a class is able to Tank/heal that player should have that too in cases where it could be needed to help the group/raid as a whole.

As a MS tank I hate it when some of my guildies forces me to play DPS because some guys dps spec aren't that good and needs to be tank. But I do it for the guild. As long as I still get to roll on tank gear.

I have one of each class in my arsenal and all classes that can have a dual role have that spec for that particular role just in case it's needed.

I also know that not all people have the time or want to give that extra to help out others in the same way and that's also why I say that this new solution won't help in the long run.

I think what will annoy a lot of DPSers is if you are an achiever/collecter and have no Tank spec you might as well reroll mains now.

Nice change: i am dps with tanking offspec, but i am doing hcs with guildmates as dps. Now i will queue alone as tank and many ppl will, i trust. Goal of making queues shorter reached!

Following the trend of the responses here, I would risk to say that we will now observe DPS specs becoming scarce lol

    Shocking news, people want rewards.

Tanks get a chance for a mount
    DPS get shorter queue.

The whining is f***ing amazing, and I'm a warlock.

Except that the Call to arms role can try it all the day, while going inside said instance, except for Deathcharger, can only be atempt one time per day (heroic locks).

Not to mention the fact that they're doing this to "help dps gearing", but it will lead to boss skipping, and that doesn't help dpsers.

well now people don't even have to go to the dungeon to get the mount they want. so much for working for things

I'm a DPS with a tank friend. I get insta-queues. If nothing changes for me and other people have it easier, it means I'm getting screwed. And yes, more people having mounts I do not have will make the game less fun. If those mounts don't mean anything, why using them as baits ? Huh ?

    That's a pretty bad idea.
