Patch 5.4 - Flexible Raid Preview
Patch 5.4 will add a a new raid difficulty:

  • Bring anywhere from 10 to 25 people to your raid and the difficulty will automatically scale.
  • Works with battletags, so you can bring friends from other realms.
  • Item level of loot is between Raid Finder and Normal and loot is awarded with the Raid Finder style loot system.
  • Separate lockout from Raid Finder and Normal, allowing you to do all three difficulties.

As with everything in the game, we’re always thinking about what more we can bring to raiding to improve the experience for an even wider range of players. While Normal and Heroic Raids are a great fit for many, we feel there’s another gap worth filling—and to that end, we’re currently working on the development of a new type of Raid for the next major content update: Flexible Raiding.

One Size Does Not Fit All
While it’s impossible to fit every player into a neat, tidy archetype, we recognize that we could be providing a better experience to one broad category of raider: social groups comprised predominantly of friends and family, and smaller guilds that do their best to include as many members in their Raid outings possible.

During the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, the 10-player Normal difficulty served these groups of players pretty well, but the unification of 10-player and 25-player into a single difficulty effectively eliminated that niche. While Raid Finder mode is extremely accessible, it doesn’t provide smaller groups with a tight-knit social experience while progressing through the content. In Patch 5.4, we’re planning to introduce a new mode of raiding that allows us to deliver the sort of experience that we think these players are looking for.

/Flex
To fill this void, we’re in the process of developing a new Flexible Raid system, which includes a new difficulty that sits between Raid Finder and Normal difficulty, while still allowing friends, family, or pick-up groups to play together. This difficulty will be available for premade groups of 10–25 players, including any number in between. That means whether you have 11, 14, or 23 friends available for a Raid, they’ll all be able to participate.

The Flexible Raid system is designed so that the challenge level will scale depending on how many players you have in the Raid. So if you switch between 14 players one week and 22 the next, the difficulty will adjust automatically. Keep in mind that unlike Raid Finder, no matchmaking is available, so you’ll need to make sure you invite people to attend—but if some can’t make it, it’s not the end of the world (or the Raid). You’ll also still be able to invite Real ID or Battle.net friends cross-realm. Who you choose to bring and what Item Level gear they’ll need to join your merry band is up to you, too—there’s no Item Level requirement for this Raid difficulty.

Dressed to Kill
A new Raid difficulty also means a new Item Level. Flexible mode will award loot with an Item Level that falls between Raid Finder and Normal quality, and will use the Raid Finder’s “per person” loot system, specialization choices, and bonus rolls, so you won’t need to worry about bringing the “wrong” person and having them win that piece of gear you’ve long been waiting for.

You Have the Keys
We plan to unlock the Flexible Raid difficulty in wings, similar to Raid Finder, but on an accelerated timetable. This new difficulty also has a separate Raid lockout from Raid Finder and Normal difficulty, allowing you to take part in all three if you so desire. You’ll also be able to complete portions of your “Glory of the Orgrimmar Raider” raid meta- achievement in Flexible mode as well as in Normal or Heroic to earn cosmetic rewards such as an epic mount. This will allow Raid groups the opportunity to switch off nights between raids to complete achievements. Finally, taking part in Flexible, Normal, or Heroic difficulty will provide access to additional rewards that won’t be available in Raid Finder.

Getting Down to Brass Tacks
As with any in-development feature, we’re continuing to refine how the Flexible Raid system will work, and we look forward to hearing your constructive feedback from your experiences on the Public Test Realm when the new system goes live.

Honestly, I don't know if that new flexible thing is needed. People will also complain that they "need" to do everything in order to get the best gear they can for progression.
I would say that this addresses part of the problem, but for me what made Ulduar fun was the sheer amount of content that was completely unique to it. Going through Ulduar I saw a surprise around every corner. Contrast that with a raid like Dragon Soul where every single boss fight took place inside of rehashed rooms that we had already encountered in the course of questing or in previous raids. Even newer raids like the Terrace of Endless Spring feel like they're taking place inside Generic Panda Temple #35. Despite those reservations I think this feature will make raids enticing again. At the very least it's going to facilitate recruiting.

Flex raid but no flex ilvl? we are already doing ilvl 522 raids(10 mans), why should we add more people to raid to get ilvl 516 items?

I love the spirit behind this change. After all, how many of us have been a group of 10 where 13 signed up or a group of 25 where only 16 show up. I think for now adding another level of difficulty is too much. I hope this is just a test and in a future xpack we see 10/25 normal/heroic and thunderforged and all that stuff removed and replaced with: LFR, normal flex, heroic flex.

I refuse to call it Flex, it's easy mode. Everyone knows it. Blizzard is just too scared to say it. All of my Chinese friends on CN realms call it easy mode.

I don't see it that way. I see this is a return to Wrath-style raid recruitment where you have semi-casual inclusive raid groups that try for the bare minimum and a core progression group that does hard modes. The fact that it's on a separate lockout means that you can bring your A-team to the "audition" for potential raiders on Tuesday and then pick the top 10 for your Normal mode raid on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. This will actually make recruiting for raids much easier.

However, the fact remains that some people (like me) simply don't enjoy raiding. It's great that Blizzard is trying to make raiders' lives easier, but I feel like all this raiding goodness is coming at the expense of traditional 5-man content.

But with the normal loot system, you would have gotten nothing at all. If the trinket dropped 5 times, wouldn't you just pass on it to give it to someone who can use/DE it? Instead you can at least vendor the trinket for some gold. I don't get this argument at all for the RF loot system.

On the other hand, I agree it's a terrible idea to use the RF loot system for Flex Raids. At least there should be an option to select what loot system to use on Flex Raids.

I know this post will drown in this thread, but I have to post it anyway.

Pre 4.3: "Not enough people raid, let's add a new difficulty and ilvl tier to get more people seeing our raids."
Pre 5.4: "People are still not happy with raids. Let's add another difficulty and ilvl tier. But wait, we have to get more people excited for it, let's hype it up big time!"

They had me until they said the loot was the same as LFR.

So, basically I can run the same raid three times every week trying to round out a gear set, and just get more and more bags of gold? No thanks.

At best, for me, this will just be something my normal mode group does when we have people on vacation.

Seems promising.... except for the part where it doesn't share a lockout with other raids /:

I think the lockout should work in a similar way to how lfr and legendary quest items supposedly does atm (meaning you get a shared lockout between normal/heroic/flex, but are able to run flex as often as you like to).

Really not a fan of running 3 raids a week + acquiring 50 coins + doing heroics or dailies to cap VP.

Why not increase it to 40 for raid sizes? I am sure there are guilds that would love to be able to do 40 man raids again. Boggles the mind.

So? Just makes it so that saving to normal mode lock you out of it completely. If you do Flex, you are locked out of normal mode.

The only ones bitching non-stop are you raiders because of how it's "required". Make it mutual exclusive with normal mode then.

LFRers might occasionally want to server PUG it in addition to doing LFR.

This is not the only major feature of 5.4. Be patient

I wish they would just have LFR, Normal Flex (with N ilvl gear) and Heroic Flex (with H ilvl gear).
That way guilds/friends could build their raids the way they want. Then there could just be a toggle for LFR style loot allocation or the classic manual style.
I am sure there are some players that think 6 different lockouts is great, but 3 seems much more manageable.

I think, raiding by definition should be a challenge. Seeing that you need more people to overcome content, means it is hard. So LFR is just a bunch of horse shit to begin with. If you don't have time to be part of organized raiding, then you shouldn't raid to begin with, because it isn't for you. LFR is like telling your kid he is good at painting even though he/she sucks at it.

If people want to do PUGs, that's their own choice and they'll just have to deal with elitism, GearScore and achievement requirements. At least for alts, achievements are now shared so it should be a bit easier.

If they just stick to 1 version per raid, be it felxible or fixed. They can create so much more good content. People who want to raid will have to get educated into how to do things and the playerbase will thus become much better by itself as well.

That way they can also focus on more 5 mans during the expansion, challenge modes maybe.

I think they should also axe scenarios and make them open world dynamic events. make dailies dynamic events as well and generally just have more dynamic events like Rift/GW2. Of course keep epic quest lines and some of the traditional questing, but only good lore quests so they keep it interesting.

Ad the ability to downscale yourself to a certain level (in an area or dungeon) like Wildstar and this game will be going upwards again instead of the slow downward spiral since WoTLK (in terms of gameplay).

If they add/change all that, then WoW will be my favorite game for along time coming !!

EDIT: Oh and why not just bump the flexible raid up to 40. That way 25 man guild with 30 active players can rejoice and even people who want to go back to 40 man can be pleased.
  1. mmocf4c8951e67's Avatar
they should make 1 raid group for 15ppl only! 2 tanks 3 healers 6melle dps 4range dps! that's all no 10man/25man/ and flex man runs!
and unlockthe Xrealm rading for all raid tiers!
more raid groups = more mess!
the boss mechanics will be exploitables! and we will see this for sure!
