WoW Down to 7.6 Million Subscribers
Blizzard had their Q1 2014 earnings call today, announcing that WoW is down to 7.6 million subscribers. This is down 200k from the Q4 2013 call that listed WoW at 7.8 million subscribers.
At 15 dollars a month, that is 3 million dollars worth of revenue per month they are not receiving anymore. Fixed costs don't move, and variable costs are slightly sticky. So if Revenue - Costs = Profits, then for an investor seeing 3 million dollars of revenue going away, that means less profit. It's not as bad as it could be, but people need to stop deluding themselves into thinking a loss of subscriptions is a good thing, or nothing. Especially since this loss has been fairly consistent over the past several years.
Someone earlier said you are counted in the quarter if you were subscribed at any point. I'm not sure if that is true or not, but it could explain why there aren't quite as many as others would predict.
Then ... explain why Blizzard had ... 132 million dollars MORE revenue in this first Quarter of 2014 then in the 1st Q of 2013.
Yep^you read that right: Blizzard revenue was UP by 40%. Investors (like me) only look at the big picture with games like D3 and the extreme successful Hearthstone, which hardly launched in that first Quarter and was not even available on the lucrative Tablet markets... by March 30.
The other partner Activision Games had lesser revenue, but with the upcoming games of Hearthstone on Android (plus first HS Raid), Bungy's Destiny, the new COD and WOW and HOTS, you just proved that WOW is not the only product within the ATVI stock ...
tldr: Blizzard made more money. WOW is no longer the only cash cow from Irvine. Hearthstone is a HUGE success.
I'm suprised the number was so low, if I had to guess we're probably seeing what the core group of wow players looks like. These are most likely the more faithful wow players after wrath wow had a lot of momentum and people wanted to see all the hype, chances are it lost those players and then some but I expect this number to be pretty close too in August. Probably another 200k but I don't see it dropping below 7 million.
Why isn't there more posts about how the current near 10 old game is bad and horrible and terrible and whatnot because it cannot compete in new subs to when it was merely 3~ years old?
Disappointed.
Still, much entertainment value from the few who want to claim 200k people stood up and unsubbed the second they found out Draenor is a no-fly zone for a while.
You never cease to amaze.
WoW will keep losing subscribers. Like it has always done. No one outside our (still gigantic) niche group gives two shits about the game anymore. Can you imagine? Seven years ago, having WoW on gaming magazine frontcovers was a good idea. Today, many years later? Lolno.
Unlike in the fantasies or those who think the game can grow forever, there's a limit of the market. A hundred million accounts, what, 40 million unique people?
The reason we're over 7 million almost a decade after release is because the game has evolved and improved, not stagnated in a patch you happen to remember enjoying the most, while you were most likely a teen with tons of friends still playing, and unlimited free time.
So the Lich King expansion had the most subscribers, and is considered the worst by majority of players, meh.
You could put Cataclysm as the second expansion and it'd be WoWs peak of subscribers. WotLK was when players leaving rose above new players joining.
One would think it was the worst time in all of WoW considering the gigantic threads about how the game was destroying itself with its casualness. FULL TIER SETS FOR JUSTICE LOLOLOL
7.60 million is still, what... probably 7 million more than any other MMO? WoW has, and always will have, a large influx and outflow of subscribers. I'm sure most of the people on this website have cancelled their account at one time or another (I know I have, thanks Cataclysm). Our jeweled beast is going nowhere anytime soon. I doubt we'll see it dip below 5 million in the next four years.
Looks like they our evening in sub loses overtime so i would stable for sure well done blizzard looks like im pre-orders wod i loved the stuff i heard in the extended watcher interview the 1million pre order already is a very good sign since its a long way before even beta is out!
Need a decoder ring for this shit. Anyways, next quarter will be a massacre.
ESO just released, and Wildstar comes out beginning of June with it's OPEN Beta starting tomorrow.... this is the time normally when people quit an MMO and look at the alternatives. I mean... Siege of Orgrimmar has been out over 9 months... you could have gotten pregnant, had the baby and now you have another several months to raise this baby before WoD comes out. I've only already run LFR on all 13 of my toons and Flex on 4 of my toons and regular on 2 way too many times..
I don't think I can do anymore at this point /yawn. BTW Wildstar rawks!!! did you guys see the skate park someone built on their housing plot? I also saw the grand piano, can't wait to see what else people come up with. And.... Warplots?!? /heavenly <3
200k drop in this quarter is not bad but you got to remember they still have to keep going till probably november without new content. They will probably throw some more free level 90 characters at us to keep the amount of subscribers up.
I'm so sad... only 7 million other people I can play with it's not fair. I wish there were as many other players in this game as other multi players games. /leSigh
