WoW Down to 7.6 Million Subscribers
Blizzard had their Q1 2014 earnings call today, announcing that WoW is down to 7.6 million subscribers. This is down 200k from the Q4 2013 call that listed WoW at 7.8 million subscribers.
Meh, that's pretty minimal. WoW seems to have settled into a ~7.5 mil range pretty steadily for a year now.

It's mostly because they aren't on the standard sub model, they don't pay $15 a month like US/European customers do. They end up paying much less on average.
Not bad, 200k subs is nothing, im suprised.
I wonder if their telling the truth however, i know so many that have quit temporarily including myself, that it is 200k, sounds just wierdly low.
You and others can rest assured that they would NOT fake these numbers. It's not about bragging to players wanting to see WoW fail, it's business. Forging numbers and leaving information out because it is inconvenient is probably illegal.
Just the other day wife was asking me about a rumor she heard regarding WoW subs down to 5 million. Told her the drop is guaranteed given the end-of-expac syndrome but shouldn't be anywhere near 5 million.
Compare to that rumor and what I expected, 200k loss is indeed rather mild. Let's see how Q2 fairs.
WoW is a dying game, every expansion is just Copy and Paste content... this is why FFXIV is the best MMO on the market atm
I've heard this same comment so many times over the years since I started playing back in BC and yet the game still has more subs that any other MMO on the market today and these numbers will go back up when the expansion is released.
This is why FFXIV will be the next F2P MMO on the market today...
Will continue to drop until the next expansion hits, as always
This shouldn't be considered shocking or even surprising, this pattern is repeated every time near the end of the current expansion and content gap
Actually, you're wrong. If you look at the graph that accompanies this news story you'll see that up to the point they hit 12 million subscribers late in Wrath their subscribers numbers either increased every quarter or remained stable (the few quarters before the Wrath peak #).
At no time prior to that did they lose more subscribers than they gained in a given quarter.
The trend you refer to is post the peak Wrath numbers and even then your statement is not entirely accurate. As a general rule the subscriber numbers have been slowly, but steadily declining since they hit their peak in Wrath and for the most part this trend has continued with the exception of the release (Sept 2012 of MoP) and the slight uptick last quarter which is for the most part within the "margin of error" and not really meaningful.
This has been the only time I have wanted to quit the game, honestly this pre-expansion stuff is getting hella old, and pet battles can only keep me going so much, and pvp is in an awful state right now (IMO)
Only 7.6 million? Oh, no! It's going F2P any day now! There is now way they are making a profit off of SEVEN POINT SIX MILLION MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTIONS!!! jk

Actually, FFXIV is doing pretty well, as they try to improve the game with the patches. It's not even competing with Wow because that's giving yourself the Kiss of Death (see Warhammer and Age of Conan. One of them is permanently dead, and the other is barely hanging onto life).
I'm more interested in the sub numbers after the expansion is out. I can see people bitch about WoD's launch after realizing how stupid it was to combine Cataclysm with BC (Since when did people like anything from Cataclysm!? Not even 4.3 could save it).
They need to get their work in order. WoD is taking far too long. Beta should of already began and release had better be September or that 200k will be the least of their worries.
Wildstar confirmed for next biggest thing. Has the WoW developers that left when it got too casual AND it doesn't reuse old models every chance it gets. Smell that? That's fresh air.

the only reason it still has that many subs because most are addicted to it or have the feeling that its a part of their life cause it has been around for so long now they cant leave, if Wow got released today, Yes TODAY in its current state, i could promise u it would never be the mmo it is today, and would probably not even reach over 3m subs, cause Shitty low lvl content, bad balanced pvp and content thats faceroll, oh yeh enjoy 13 months of no content cause u know, even games with a lower sub count when they are about to release an expansion release content updates till the expansion hits, sure the expansions blizzard release have plenty content and u may say all the numbers and changes are more then other mmos but they also got around 7 MILLION subscribers more + mounts in store and insta 90s or whatever then any other mmo out there so its kind of funny,

It's taking as long as it always takes. Also looking at the sub history, the year we spent in Sunwell and ICC and DS had little noticeable impact on subs, they're being too strongly driven by other factors.
Personally I hope they take their time, I have a lot of CMs still to run and I should really go get me a Kor'kron wolf...
