I guess I expected the joke to go over many peoples' heads as I doubted everybody had watched it.
Deathnote is an anime. There's a genius highschooler who gets hold of a notebook that belonged to a death god, it's called the death note. If you write a person's name in there while thinking about their face, that person will die. He uses it to kill any and all criminals he can discover in an attempt to make a perfect world. L is a codename for the genius detective that tries to bring the killer to justice.
