No, communism has had its day in the west. Just like capitalism is entering its death throes. The rise of an intermediate between socialism and capitalism will help the human race move forwards.
RETH
Yeah.... I think not.
If SOCIALISM isn't working what makes you think that COMMUNISM will?
And I'm from the former socialist country and I can vouch that it doesn't work.

I agree to some extent but it will not be pure communism. It will be like the Kurt Vonnegut book called Jailbird.
The more technology improves, the closer we come to true communism. Better energy production, robots, artificial intelligence and other technologies will make everything much more accessible to everybody. The only thing that will stop this is capitalist entities artificially inflating the cost of things which will still happen but it will be harder for companies to get away with.

The fall of the Soviet Union is most certainly NOT a minor set back. It's was the final nail in the coffin of the idea that a state can be organized on the principles of Communism.
The fact that other self identified Communist nations like China and Vietnam all embraced Capitalism (enthusiastically) in all cases producing significant increases in the standard of living of their citizens also demonstrated that if the economic model of communism is abandoned then the authoritarian governments can actually preserve themselves.
Communism can only really exist in a post scarcity environment. We currently simply do not have the resource and energy abundance required for that.
It is also true that automation will significantly change how our economy works in the near future. We will essentially have a choice to make, soon, we either create strong welfare states and accept that not everyone will be a productive member of society, but we provide them with enough resources to keep them as viable consumers to preserve a functioning economy, or we abandon a significant portion of the population to what is essentially total destitution. The latter would create a nightmarish dystopia.
Something like Universal Basic Income isn't actually a communist idea, but rather a socialist solution within a capitalist environment.
Just because something fails in real life application doesn't mean the concept itself is at fault. The execution of communism that we've seen is always flawed, partially because we as a society and civilization aren't ready for it yet, socially and technologically speaking.
I'm so tired of this cliche.

Top 30 poorest countries in the world. EVERY SINGLE ONE HAS FREE MARKETS AND IDENTIFIES AS "CAPITALIST". (North Korea not on the list, because frankly no data is available).
Democratic Socialism is the economic model of literally the entire fucking developed world from Canada to Lichtenstein etc.
Democratic Socialism and Market Capitalism ARE NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE.
You are entitled to your opinion but I hold Marx largely accountable for what his followers have done. Marx did not believe in the concept of human nature and had no interest in creating a blueprint for his ideal society. He also embedded his own repugnant views into communism that are entirely rooted in pre-enlightenment ideals.
And that's why you'll probably miserably die of diabetes or heart disease while bankrupting your entire family because healthcare is private and you won't be able to afford it
I'll keep enjoying the benefits of living in a civilized (read socialist) country and pay taxes that actually serve a purpose other than blow up afghan children with drones
Most of those poor countries are marked by a long term war, and political instability. So your claim pretty damn dishonest.
Also, all those rich countries are social democracies, which is completely different from democratic socialism.
Social democracy is an ideology that supports government interventions on economy and on society, to promote social justice, but accepting and respecting the principles of capitalism.
Democratic socialism advocates political democracy, but also social ownership of means of production.
So yeah, stop spreading fallacies.
Pretty good bait thread though. More likely to see a socialism lead world, considering nearly all countries have some socialist institutions. Constant automation is leading that way anyways. Adapt or die.
What you're referring to is the U-3 rate of unemployment, also known as people who are in the labor force and/or have looked for a job in the past month. The U-6 rate is actually much closer to reality and that's at about 8.1% as of last month.
TL;DR: Unemployment rates are kind of complicated.
