I think it is more a case of my enemy's enemy is my friend sort of thing. The alt right types flock to him because he criticises regressive leftist ideology, even though, ideologically, he clearly has little love for the alt right, he just doesn't criticise them anywhere near as much as the left, though this appears to be more because he is in much closer proximity to the nuts on the left, due to his work in academia, than any kind of ideological alignment with the alt right. This is the danger zone for people, ranging from center left, centrists and center right people, who are worried about the ideology and actions of those on the far left, never mind the backlash from the far left (a concern for left leaning people), there is the added danger of some sort of loose association (real or imagined) with those on the far right, as many there will be making the same sorts of criticisms (for very different reasons, they are involved in the same identity politics driven power games that the far left are playing, the only meaningful difference seems to be the target of the hate, and a greater number of them are more inclined to serious violence).

And those on the left use this "association" with the alt right to tar him, and avoid any kind of counter argument against his points against them. And it is often used to build a straw man, where people can attack the fact that the alt right like him, therefore he must be alt right, instead of the substance of what he is saying. The intellectual dishonesty in this approach, bad people like what you say, so what you say must be bad, I suspect is willful, to avoid any kind of serious engagement, as I cannot accept that the people who do this are so stupid as to think this is a logically sound stance to take.

And for the record, before I am called an alt right fan boy for making this claim, I don't worship this man, I don't agree with him on everything, but I do respect that he incurred a very real professional risk in speaking out against far left ideology (and I share his core concerns about far left ideology, so yea, I am biased), and is willing to debate ideas with people that he doesn't agree with, and feel that he is often willfully misrepresented and mischaracterised (no honest viewing of his ideas could lead someone to seriously think that he is a Nazi, or even, as seems to be one of the more popular claims made about him, that he is some imbecile pseudo intellectual, fair enough disagreeing with people, he clearly isn't stupid) as a consequence of this, as is the way of far left activists. And far right for that matter, don't take that as me claiming this to be an exclusively far left tactic, it is just that this is where his biggest critics are, and therefore why I focused on them.

I'm actually amazed, blown away even, at how many Hitler and Nazi apologists there are in the world, even among my RL friends, which makes for a super shitty situation.
