I think it's due to our innate nature, as Theo said earlier. Technology has also changed our framework for social referencing. It used to be that you'd compare yourself to your neighbors, now people are comparing themselves to celebrities in TV, film and social media. Social media is especially good at making people think that they can/should become the next Kardashian, or that other people's lives are so much happier than their own.
Research has shown that using social media less often can make people happier, and a lot of that is due to reduced social referencing.
