Q: You mentioned trilogy. Doom Eternal is obviously the second chapter. Is The Ancient Gods the third and final game? You call it "the epic conclusion to the Doom Slayer saga."

HM: It is. For this arc. It is the Doom universe, so there's so much more to tell! When you look at other IPs and fictional universes, they're able to go forwards and backwards with their stories.
Sounds to me they're going to focus on the Doom universe without Doomguy.

I am trying to convince my husband to buy an Econoline van, get this Doom Eternal art on the side, and park in the driveway blasting Mercyful Fate's Don't Break the Oath.

    Give it to me.

I prefer the pacing of it more, it's a bit more my speed. It'll be a bit before I pick up these expansions though. I do hope that there's more to this franchise and that this isn't "the end" so to speak.

And they could pull it through by having the dna sample Dr. Elena Ritsarson has from the doomslayer into creating another one in case something happens(cloning etc).....and it does. So they can pop a new slayer called DoomGal :P
DoomGal would be sweet, not sure what she'd fight if the demons are all dead/consigned to Hell however. Corrupted Sentinels or something just doesn't sound as fun as butchering hellspawn by the hundreds.

Also, nice interview @Pebrocks The Warlock. Can't wait to use the hammer tomorrow, and yes pleaaaase ray tracing, my 3070 needs a workout and I'm eager to see this implemented with Id's patented killer optimization.

If they gave Quake the Doom treatment I'd play nothing else for at least a year.

Pretty hard to do since he is the focal character, there is nothing and no one else in the lore aside from the arc involving BJ from Wolfenstein and the original marine from the old games who are more associated. Aside from an origin story, I'm not sure they can pull it off. I know Hugo was asked about the possibility of a female Slayer but I am not very confident that they could make it work since there's no canon established to tie it together with the existing universe. The novels that were made aren't really canon even though the first one ties into the first Doom game. Also, Fem Slayer would have to be entirely different from the current Slayer.

I'm here for that artwork though. Huge fan of where they've taken the visual presentation, both in and out of game.
Honestly, sad to say I agree.

I really loved Doom 2016, but Doom Eternal has been painful as shit. I actually had to put the difficulty down to the easiest mode just to get through level 1. -_- I never had that problem in 2016.

And yeah, exhausting. Nail -> Coffin.

The story honestly barely matters, if the gameplay is there no one will care that a Fem Slayer won't 'fit in the lore'.
It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death

They basically invented the current Slayer, as well as his supporting cast and an entire lore around the ancient warriors who took him in and the nefarious angels who wronged him, wholecloth. Aside from 3 which gets ignored, Doom's lore was just "this space marine killed demons because they killed his friends and rabbit, the end", which they welded into the current lore effortlessly. I don't see why they can't do that a second time, especially given that there will still be potential hooks like Samur Makyr making more Slayers or a particularly badass female Sentinel rising in the ranks. And Hugo already said she wouldn't fight like the Slayer, she'd be more lethal (somehow lol) and graceful, if I remember his words correctly on stream.

The bigger problem will be giving her enemies to fight. Doom has always been about slaying demons, anything else would likely just feel off.

Doom guy isn’t the only human to successfully fight against Hell.

They can always have a character get the Doom guy power boost.

If they do create DoomGal I hope she is well defined in the muscle department.

Would love a female slayer too as long as they keep making more games for us to rip and tear through.
Do you hear the voices too?

I wouldn't mind them introducing a new character and building a game with more of the classic gameplay and design being the focus, rather than the platforming heavy, resource managing combat that Eternal has.

I absolutely prefer 2016 over Eternal. Its to frantic for me, completed the base game but not touching it for more.

2016 and Eternal are just different games- both excellent but the DDT likely only overlapped at "shooting" and "badass". Which I think is okay, because a straight sequel to 2016 that didn't change as dramatically as Eternal would have likely been a "good" yet largely forgettable game. They needed to mix it up for Eternal.

Bold strokes. Interesting failures are more admirable than competent mediocrity.
