It actually makes me feel worse. The fact that this is such a huge monumental deal because usually these people get off makes the situation to me even more hopeless because it is so fucking bogus it is not a norm.
And given the video and everything, there was no way in hell any defence could have been made that wouldn't make Chauvin seem like the exact piece of shit he is.
I think this Malcolm X quote on progress kind of sums up how I feel to an extent.
At first I was confused, distraught and hopeless. But then I thought about two things:
1.) cops will likely get revenge for wrongful termination and prosecution (one way or another)
2.) since this is a short-term victory, maybe they’ll pack the bags they’ve stolen and go back to the houses they’re squatting in.
With any luck, vigilante justice will prevail, but in this neutered country, I’m not holding my breath (like their martyr did).
As happy as I am, it doesn't mean shit without reform or even sentencing.
Police were just kicking the asses of protesters last night. There's going to be police and 2A types looking to cause trouble. This is just a time out.
Resident Cosplay Progressive
that cop who murdered that other lad with the 'i thought it was my tazer' is gonna be sweating.
Yeah I know, and agree. The mountain that is left to be climbed still seems so tall in front of us.
But look down below us and see the progress that has been made. And this really is a HUGE step up. Which, as you alluded to, is sad and depressing and even infuriating. But progress is progress, and victories are still victories.
I would also like to point out that this trial has changed the way that the US looks at race relations. No one doubts that systemic racism is a huge problem anymore.
Black Lives Matter did its thing last summer. Progress was made, but the backlash got Trump SEVENTY FOUR MILLION VOTES - oops he lost anyways, and oh yeah because of the blue? state of Georgia, the white supremacists lost the Senate as well. And now Black Lives Matters continues to move forward, stronger than ever before.
There is a lot of work still to be done. But I stand by my statement that now is a time to reflect and enjoy and be happy a bit. All the while planning for the future!
Now if we can get justice for Atatiana Jefferson next. August 2021.
