I'm sure you knew, but considering the current situation it's important to remember that Odessa is in Ukraine - and not occupied; whereas Siberia is in Russia.

Basically the entire Odessa Military District from Russia and USSR is now part of southern Ukraine (occupied and otherwise) and Moldovia.

I knew, yes, at the time it was one country of course...but of course Odesa was a lot more agreeable than Siberia.

The battalions apparently will consist of roughly 400 men each aged between 18 and 60. They will belong to various branches of service including motorized rifle, tank, and naval infantry, but also signals and logistics. Recruits are not required to have prior military service and will undergo only 30 days of training before deployment to Ukraine.

I wonder how much "volunteering" vs "volun-told" is going on here. Very telling that Russia is having to "conscript" more units to fight in Ukraine. Just shows the only reason the West doesn't get into this and make it end in a week is Russia has nukes.

From my understanding: the areas are voluntold, and the actual people going are actual volunteers if you're from a poor minority or a poor area then going to die in a war might be attractive if the secondary benefits, family taken care of, being a veteran etc. are outweighing the risks.

They aren't being informed of the risks. According to the only 'news' they get there have only been a handful of deaths, not the twenty to thirty thousand they have suffered.

Plus the centuries of indoctrination leads to things like this, where a Russian mother turned in her own son for dodging the draft.

She is no doubt eager for the blood money she will get for him fighting and dying. Maybe even get her first ever toilet.

They won't get to go back. They'll be there until the end. Unlike the Ukrainians, the Russians haven't been able to rotate troops in and out of combat. Recently, wives of some contract soldiers had been complaining their husbands had been fighting on the front line since the war started and begging they get pulled out. Fay chance of that. You can't go that long in combat without serious degradation of effectiveness.

    Who says they're getting back?

Sunk cost fallacy in action - a Russian general saying they can't afford to leave Ukraine like a beaten dog no matter how hard it is to stay and fight.

Because withdrawing would be admitting defeat and that Putler got thousands of Russian men killed or maimed and ruined Russias economy and international standing for nothing.

It would all but guarantee a repeat of the October Revolution in one way or another, ending with Putin being dragged through Moscow.

Hence the usage of the word 'if', not 'when'. IF they come back = not sure they will come back at all. WHEN they come back = it's a certainty they'll come back just a matter of time. (or so I was taught to use those words, English not being my first language but it's about the same in Dutch so I have no reason to doubt this.)

Because if they walk away and Putin isn't killed by citizens then Putin will kill the generals that failed with this "military operation."

Yeah, I could approach it later without issue, not sure what happened there.

As for the post, russia iss really getting in a pickle, if they escalate then they show weakness as they need more to subjugate a smaller country, but if they withdraw they are weak as well. This is especially true for putin isn't it? In my mind withdrawing now, on their OWN terms, is better than being forced out as the latter is much more of an embarrassment.
