You're thinking of nuclear detonations that generate an EMP blastwave as a side effect of... physics, don't ask me for details. :P
It's an easy mistake to make when they constantly remind us of volcanic eruptions in magnitudes of Hiroshima bombs.
And it's also a very localised effect. It wouldn't affect more than the near area around such a nuclear blast.

It's a shitload :\ When they blow, they reaaaaaaaaally throw ash around - that's why it's enough to drop the temperature probabbblyyy 10 degrees, maybe more, globally. Certainly more (12-15) within the Americas themselves, almost instantly (in a geological scale.. a few months). Which then drops everywhere for a few years, meaning there's not going to be a place on earth that's not dusted with ash basically year-round for two-three years. .5cm, most likely.. but imagine how much that is when you're talking about a gear that's .4 cm, or a motor that has a bearing of 1cm. That's huuge for mechanical stuff, even if it's not very noticeable (relatively...) for people.
So going with this guy, But there should be a no option. Why? Simple. Take a look at how advanced Mankind as progressed over just the last 50 years. Hell we are getting to the point where flying cars and holographic computers will be here in the next 10/15 years. I would put my money on the fact that when it does try to blow we either have mastered how the earth working and stop it or and living on different planets in the 1st place and just don't care. Could just me tho, I remember people thinking i was full of shit back when i said there would be a Playstation 2. Guess who got the last laugh there kek.

i'm trying to remember some random tangent my teacher went on like... 8 years ago...
but it was soemthing tied to the lightning strikes you can see present within the ash cloud of some eruptions. But anyway there's still the posible chance of just forcing the areas to strain their electrical grid to the point of going down at the very least. Either by destroying key buildings or as a side effect of human interference in a reactionary event that isn't directly tied to an eruption naturally.
