and isn't there also a little side effect of large enough eruptions that fuck over electronics?
You're thinking of nuclear detonations that generate an EMP blastwave as a side effect of... physics, don't ask me for details. :P

It's an easy mistake to make when they constantly remind us of volcanic eruptions in magnitudes of Hiroshima bombs.

And it's also a very localised effect. It wouldn't affect more than the near area around such a nuclear blast.

Hmmm. those diesel engines are really rugged. I don't think a bit of ash has as much impact on them as it does on jet engines.

Well a USGS report is actually blaming wastewater disposal and not the fracking itself so...

and really the only answer Im qualified to give is "I dont know".

There'd be a *lot*. It'd just settle in the water and pretty much stay there, as well as falling in on top of it.. so basically anything that's not actually the part that handles the gas would be the issue. Motors, gears, water intake.. they'd be gummed up by cement.

they're not getting a foot of ash unless they're on a lake or river fairly close. In which case the people are fucked because they're far too close.

Meh, it's too difficult for me to comprehend the amount of ash you want to have blown into the air. But then, I don't have a better idea, so yeah, you're probably right.

It's a shitload :\ When they blow, they reaaaaaaaaally throw ash around - that's why it's enough to drop the temperature probabbblyyy 10 degrees, maybe more, globally. Certainly more (12-15) within the Americas themselves, almost instantly (in a geological scale.. a few months). Which then drops everywhere for a few years, meaning there's not going to be a place on earth that's not dusted with ash basically year-round for two-three years. .5cm, most likely.. but imagine how much that is when you're talking about a gear that's .4 cm, or a motor that has a bearing of 1cm. That's huuge for mechanical stuff, even if it's not very noticeable (relatively...) for people.

So going with this guy, But there should be a no option. Why? Simple. Take a look at how advanced Mankind as progressed over just the last 50 years. Hell we are getting to the point where flying cars and holographic computers will be here in the next 10/15 years. I would put my money on the fact that when it does try to blow we either have mastered how the earth working and stop it or and living on different planets in the 1st place and just don't care. Could just me tho, I remember people thinking i was full of shit back when i said there would be a Playstation 2. Guess who got the last laugh there kek.

Preeeettty damn close to what yellowstone would do, unless we're talking it's doing the maximum of any volcano could ever do.

Yes, it was pretty shitty. No, billions didn't die, and the fact that we HAVE artificial means makes it EASIER.. given that you can grow plants without the use of the sun, at all. There's also the fact that not all plants need extraordinary amounts of sunlight all the time, and can survive, as well as animals being able to be fed non-locally, which would provide a great deal of food for people.

This also doesn't take into account the mass amounts we have canned, preserved, and otherwise stored that would keep a population afloat for quite some time.
Billions couldn't die when the world population was under a billion during the Year Without a Summer.

    Just saying.

Edit: Or right around a billion. It wasn't very high. Can't find an exact number, but it was like 900 million to 1 billion.

Failing to understand scaling doesn't make you right, unless you believe 1/7th+ of the population died during that time.

i'm trying to remember some random tangent my teacher went on like... 8 years ago...

but it was soemthing tied to the lightning strikes you can see present within the ash cloud of some eruptions. But anyway there's still the posible chance of just forcing the areas to strain their electrical grid to the point of going down at the very least. Either by destroying key buildings or as a side effect of human interference in a reactionary event that isn't directly tied to an eruption naturally.
