I think the lesson is to never speak in GenOT. That place just isn't nice, and brings out the worst in everyone.
Hopefully Dendrek will be back in not too long!

I added support for lists, newlines and optimized some tag usage in the rolecard builder. I believe it is beta quality at this point. So I'll just put it in my signature.
    Still todo: custom styles.

    Welcome back, Dendrek

By the way, I have a question for you unfortunate bastards that happen to be located in Australia.
How the heck do you cope with your internet?

I'm currently at my mothers'. She lives in the middle of nowhere, and thus there is no broadband option. Instead she has this "wireless broadband" service over the 3G network (supposed to be 4G, but as I said, middle of nowhere), where there is a 'generous' monthly quota of 10 GB. Which covers about 500 visits to MMO-champion. Needless to say, I spent that the first three days. And I've been forced to buy 'cheap' 5GB data packages at a bi/tri-daily interval ever since. Frankly, this summer vacation home at my mother is turning out to be pretty expensive.

Now, I figured I could do something else than spending my days watching HD videos on youtube. But one by one my games just keep disappearing. Hearthstone got a major content patch last week. WoW got one today. Even that game I am playing on steam got a major update (though I downloaded it anyway).

So, from someone used to unlimited internet, how the heck do you cope? Why aren't there riots in the street? I am half-jokingly thinking that I could start my own ISP and make a generous profit by just undercutting these telecom bastards. And that's only half joking.

Wait..wait...WAIT...You're in the outback of Australia?

Things aside, yes our internet is fucking woeful. The current government (which got re-elected two weeks ago, fucking kill me now please) fucking BUTCHERED the living shit out of fibre optic cables which was being rolled out from the previous government (Labor 2010-2013). Instead the LNP decided nup fuck it, sticking with copper. COPPER. The fibre optic cables are so fucking slowly being rolled out nationally its insane. The fibre AKA "NBN" is literally 3 streets away from me, and it's been 3 streets away from me for years.

Even the NBN is somewhat bad compared to the rest of the world. But it's definitely better than fucking copper. What's worse, the PM (LNP) said they "turned the NBN disaster into a success". Biggest fucking lie if I've ever heard one.

Though I do have unlimited data. Caps still very much exist in Australia though.

Danner, turn off all extras from this website. Do not show sigs. Make sure ads are blocked. Put Crackleslap on ignore. Anything you can to reduce the data load.

Outback of Norway. Virtually indistinguishable from the outback of Australia, apart from the fact that none of our plant and wildlife is completely harmless, while yours is literally designed to murder humans as painfully as possible. And possibly some elevation differences.

Here in Norway, when the rest of the world was moving away from ISDN back in 1995 due to the fact that it was incredibly slow, technically impossible to configure properly, and needlessly expensive, the Norwegian telecompany decided it would be amazing to introduce it to the country. Tells you just about all you need to know about Norwegian telecompanies. I said screw that, moved to the university campus, gaining 100 mbit full duplex internet. Now it is 18 years later, I'm long past finished at the university - but my home city internet is still a squeaky old car in comparison to those days. And my mother's internet is frankly a scam in comparison to my home city internet.

I know who to blame. And I am just about ready to riot.

I was downloading an episode of Lets fight ghost yesterday, and actually found my self thinking "Man I wish I could pay for faster Internet" It really is sad that that isn't even an option here (unless you're on the NBN which is slowly rolling out but not near me yet)

But I don't have to deal with the other stuff you listed, I have no data cap. We have an "unlimited" plan, there are cheaper plans that are limited but I'd go over way too often to consider them. It's really just the speed that's an issue. Even phone data is okay. I almost always have 4G or LTE connection on my phone, never 3G except for when I go out into rural areas which isn't often. The situation with phone data is such that even with that having an 8GB cap and then costing me more, I almost never have my phone connected to wifi because it's just so slow in comparison. Like can't watch youtube most of the time slow.

The Script Safe extension works wonders for this. Blocks literally everything except HTML/CSS until you give it permission to run. It's how I keep my former web-dev self from going fucking insane while I wade through the quagmire of social media, click bait and iframes that everyone loads their sites with.

EDIT: I just looked at the options again. I knew this thing was configurable, but damn. There's even an option for blocking <img> tags.

    Ouch.

Here in Norway, watching movies on a phone costs and arm and a leg due to data caps. TV commercials are still going on trying to sell phone subscriptions with "a massive 1 GB monthly data included!". I just roll my eyes. But the speed is pretty good actually. The government auctioned off two frequency ranges worth of 4G internet, on the condition that the buyer of each frequency range managed to cover at least 95% of the country. Which in Norway is pretty hard! (many secluded valleys).

There was a massive bidding war over those frequency ranges, and the buyers soon both regretted it. But they had by then already signed the contract. So now you get 4G cellphone coverage almost everywhere in Norway. Well, everywhere apart from where my mother lives, apparently. The construction process was pretty fun to watch, the two companies were competing pretty heavily over who could get to that 95% coverage first, and were sending tv commercials that were kinda unintentionally hilarious. "We [companyname] are building 4G in the hardest to reach places in Norway! Now [some place 20 minutes outside of Oslo] has finally gotten 4G!". It got a bit better eventually, but they were heavily mocked for a while

Regular internet speed has never really been a problem in Norway. We're a sparsely populated country. Few inhabitants per fibre cable. Capacity is always available, almost no reason for the companies to hold us back by imposing speed limits. Besides, the speed limits was what only difference between those selling broadband for a long while; it's heavily optimized for speed already. The problem is really the telecom monopoly on internet access. It's not really a monopoly. But unless you live in a city, it's your only option. And then you're often screwed.

I feel ya Danner. I have a 20g data cap and it's awful. Stupid suburban Murica. Just gotta space out usage. Also I use my phone for stuff too
