Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is the proud new owner of a summer home in the Champlain Islands, Seven Days has confirmed.

The Burlington resident last week plopped down nearly $600,000 on a lakefront camp in North Hero.

Sanders’ new crib has four bedrooms and 500 feet of Lake Champlain beachfront on the east side of the island — facing Vermont, not New York. The Bern will keep his home in Burlington and use the new camp seasonally.

“We’ve traveled up to the islands many times over the years — almost always on day trips,” Sanders’ wife, Jane O’Meara Sanders, told Seven Days in a written statement. “We’ve been impressed with the North Hero community, eaten at the North Hero House and Shore Acres and have suggested them to friends who were looking for a beautiful place to stay or have dinner. St. Anne’s Shrine in Isle La Motte is my favorite church and it is nearby.”

Last Tuesday, the day of the closing, a relaxed-looking Bernie Sanders posed for a photo at Hero’s Welcome General Store on Route 2. The store, a bit south of his new abode, serves a sandwich called “Feel the Bun” in the senator’s honor. The $6.99 deli delight consists of a “HUGE” homemade roll, sliced turkey, fresh apple chutney, hot pepper relish, lettuce, tomato and provolone cheese.

“It’s not fair that the Billionaire Class controls 99 percent of the bread,” the menu description reads. “Here’s a sandwich for the rest of us … to keep us nourished until everything cool is free!”

Sanders ordered the sandwich during his visit last week. Hero’s Welcome owner, Robert Camp, told Seven Days*the store once offered a Sanders sandwich that poked fun at the senator, but later pulled it. The new version captures the essence of his rise to national prominence, Camp said.

The popular general store has a line of chairs out front — one side labeled “Republicans,” the other “Democrats.” In the middle, until recently, sat a lone “Sandernistas” chair, Camp said. That chair will be back — as long as the new neighbor doesn’t mind, Camp joked.

“He’s just been great,” said Camp. “This is going to be his home, so we won’t encourage autographs.”

The small Grand Isle County town has been abuzz for the last several days with the news. O’Meara Sanders said: “The entire family is very excited about it.”
Ah, so that is how they got him to keep quiet about the DNC hack scandal. Seems like he even sold himself cheap, as always.

But seriously, I don't see the issue here. Kinda funny he picked somewhere that used to poke fun of him, but just seems to show he's a good sport about it.

His sister said they sold their family home in Maine that they owned since 1900 and used that money to buy this home.

Can you pay for it outright?

    You should read slower

    they
    sold
    a
    house
    they
    owned
    since
    1900
    in
    their
    family
    to
    buy
    this
    one

my god its not rocket science.

with a 600k net worth and a 6 figure salary, 600k house is easy to get a mortgage

That doesn't mean that he paid cash. Could have simply used the equity as a down payment, etc.

I really have no idea why it matters to begin with.

Socialism is literally the nicest thing out there as far as treating other people as fellow human beings at least :P
Nice work Hubcap. It only took one post before you baited a guy who doesn't know what socialism is to tell you what socialism is.

LUL... a $600k home is what people are complaining about? In California a shitty house is over 1 million. Where I live every house is at least 2 million in a 5 mile radius. If he owned 3 600k houses he would be a normal person in Newport Beach. He is a US Senator and he deserves to get paid for having such a high responsibility job. I would rather a Senator get a high base salary to attract higher skilled people into politics than to be paid 60k and be inclined to take bribes.

Besides, a $600k home with the low interest rates and assuming he has good credit, he only has to put like 120k down to get a loan. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton made 300k on a single 1 hour speech for Goldman Sachs and people want to criticize Bernie for being a home?? What a joke.

Well if his sister said so, I'm sure it's all on the up and up. Everyone knows family won't lie for family so, we are safe here with that as a source.

Why didn't he move into the inner city instead of an island with 99.9% caucasion residents?

It doesn't matter. It's just amusing to play the game. I'm sure someone will get really heated over it but, it's mostly just a funny story link.

So you believe it's impossible to empathize with the poor unless you live amongst them as they do.

    That explains a lot.
