That discussion would be a more nuanced topic for another day. However, my specific irritation in Alderamin is that Itka literally walks up to his fellow female military officers and says, "Hey, the right side of my bed is open tonight." And they do...nothing. It feels jarring and poorly executed on both fronts.
For Itka, they're trying to show that he is, in fact, a womanizer. They've already established that he was sleeping with the mother of one of his fellow officers previously, and that unlike most male protagonists in anime is actually capable of seducing girls. But they're just doing a bad job of it. If there's one thing Itka is supposed to have it is subtle intelligence, but any rutting, half-sloshed baboon could make passes like that. Also, it's incomplete: his attempts are oafish because the way the scenes are handled you know that he isn't going to succeed during the course of the series. In other words, despite the fact that he is theoretically supposed to be smooth and wooing them he'll still be treated on screen the same way as every other bumbling male.
Counter to what Radio said, I actually think that the series would be improved if he got somewhere with these girls. It doesn't have to be some hentai to indicate that he is sleeping around. Sexual activity can be indicated in plenty of ways that aren't pornographic; the latest "91 Days" is an example of this. It's just that Itka's womanizing is so halfhearted on the part of the writing that I'm aghast.
Now on the other end of things is the way the girls respond to him. It just strikes me as lacking in the kind of venom such a blatant advance would normally bring out. Now, we are in an older time period so technically the women might be more used to these passes (although their presence in the military at all is a total anachronism), but I still can't shake the feeling that their reactions are a mismatch.
Woo. I have to remind myself not to be whiny sometimes when I spent a few hours on a post and get no replies; at this point I know they get read, I just have a way of making it hard to reply.
Also, to your comments inside the spoilers: I agree that knowing what would happen made some parts a bit more dull, but this helped free me up to focus on the side aspects. It's only this rewatch that made me appreciate the last arc's side characters; if you had asked me before this I would have had nothing. So I guess that is beneficial.
...and that eats up my 30 minutes before I have to return for Back to School night.
I'm trying to will myself to watch the last two episodes. In a funk right now, but I've got your post bookmarked. I'm also kinda annoyed that it's basically just you and me talking about the show, despite how many people voting for it? I get that it's not existential or philosophical or anything, but...just talk about something. Anything. Hell, most of my 'discussion' was just pointing out silly comments Holo makes. I feel like I would have had a better time watching the show if there was more discussion on it...
Spoiler:
Shitttt
Mob Psycho: I would give this episode 150%!!
