    Obama commutes Chelsea Manning sentence

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-38659068

President Barack Obama has commuted Chelsea Manning's sentence for leaking documents to Wikileaks in 2010.

The 29-year-old transgender US Army private, born Bradley Manning, will be freed on 17 May instead of her scheduled 2045 release.

She was sentenced to 35 years in 2013 for her role in leaking diplomatic cables to the anti-secrecy group.

The leak was one of the largest breaches of classified material in US history.

Can't commute the sentence of someone who fled the country to avoid persecution. Have to go to trial first, then get sentenced, and only then can your sentence be commuted.

I...honestly don't know how to feel. I have formulated no opinion on this matter. However, the conversation ensuring from our first (half) black president pardoning a Transgender individual who committed treason days before he leaves office is sure to be interesting.

because unlike Manning he did nothing but irreparable harm to our intelligence network, oh and fleeing to Russia sure doesn't help his case.

It's one thing to leak classified intel to the enemy, but leaking information about bad behaviour to the public should be a defensible action. I'd prefer if governments didn't have dark secrets they wanted to keep hidden in the first place, rather than punishing those who reveal them. Whistleblowing should be a form of protected speech.

He showed that the NSA unrightfully sniffed the american people telephones, and spied on every internet activity.

Which isnt really on par with the american constitution.

Telling the enemy how to bypass our defenses has always been a crime. It's treason in other countries.
