    Will There Be Another "Titanic"?

I know that I've read things before saying things along the lines of "no, there won't ever be another Titanic due to the possibility of another disaster," but after watching:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSGes...feature=g-vrec
I started to think about all the new technologies that are out that could help prevent incidents like these. If a company put an incredible amount of money towards it, don't you think that they would make sure that their ship was as secure as possible? And sure, you can say the same thing about the Titanic. It took an incredible amount of money to make, but back then, they didn't have as many security measures and the technology that we have now wasn't there then.

I know it's not as practical for travel now, since most people would just fly if they need to cross the oceans, but maybe one of the ship's selling points could be its "wow factor"

So, do you guys think that there might end up being a new ship that is similar to the Titanic? Even if it's not in the near future?

Not from something like that, terrorist related attack on a massive boat or plane would be close

Yeah, I thought of that too while writing this, lol. I still can't believe that this happened... I just think that it would be really cool if some "super ship" came to be again. Maybe it could have its own docking island that allows transportation to land from there?

Maybe to some degree, but with the same kind of wow factor of the Titanic? Probably not. It's a technology that's too old and too common now. There are cruise ships with unbelievable facilities all over the place now that dwarf Titanic, and nobody thinks twice about them.

There were actually three ships of the White Star Line, owners for the three. The Titanic was the second of three Olympic Class ocean liners built by Harland & Wolff. The first was the Olympic then Titanic and last Britannic. The Britannic was sunk by a mine during the First World War. The Olympic survived into old age as it were and eventually scrapped.

Never say never as my grandmother always said. Anything can happen. Blind trust in technology of any sort can lead to disastrous consequences especially if the tecnology gets so sophistcated and complex that no one person can grasp the full workings of the technology. As two examples look at Three Mile Island and the Space Shuttles.

we still have transatlantic cruises and on cruise ships that i am fairly sure dwarf the titanic in size, so are you just wondering about the name then?

http://www.cruisetransatlantic.com/cruises.html (30 second google search, it lists a bunch of ships that make that trip)

The largest cruise ship in the world is 5 times the size of the Titanic... and many others out there are larger than it as well. Unless you mean iceberg accidents, in which case, yes, iceberg accidents still happen all the time. In fact, as more ice breaks off of the arctic shelf in the next few years, they're going to become more frequent. We've been lucky so far not to have another cruise disaster with them, but cruise ship disasters obviously DO happen, as we all saw last year with the Costa Concordia.

There will always be another great tragedy like that in the future. People can take many precautions to lessen the chance, but inevitably, an unforseen circumstance will come up and something terrible will happen, especially as we build more new technology and put more trust into it.

Even if ocean cruise liners are much safer now, maybe next time the thing that crashes will have been cruising in space instead of an ocean.

There have been a lot of disasters with higher death tolls than the Titanic. 1,517 – RMS Titanic (North Atlantic, 1912)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._by_death_toll

    Maritime
1,565–4,400 – MV Doña Paz (Tablas Strait, Philippines, 1987). Estimates of casualties vary because of overloading and unmanifested passengers; the official death toll was 1,565, with only 21 survivors; apparently the deadliest peacetime shipping disaster ever.
2,750–3,920 – SS Kiangya (off Shanghai, 1948). Estimates of casualties vary due to large number of stowaways on board.
    1,863 – MV Joola (Senegal, 2002)
    1,547 – SS Sultana (Mississippi River, 1865)

    Nuclear and radiation accidents
4,056 – Chernobyl disaster, Ukraine, April 26, 1986. 56 direct deaths and 4,000 extra cancer deaths.

    Smog
    4,000 – The Great Smog (London, December 5–9, 1952)

    Rail
    ~1,700 – Sri Lanka tsunami-rail disaster (Sri Lanka, 2004)

    Industrial disasters
    12,000 – Bhopal disaster (India, 1984)
    1,549 – Benxihu Colliery explosion, (China, 1942)

    Explosions

1,950 – Halifax Explosion (Nova Scotia, Canada, 1917)[14]
1,500 – Ammunition plant with facilities explode at Smederevo, outskirt of Belgrade, Serbia, June 8, 1941

    Coal Mine
    1,549 – Benxihu Colliery explosion, China, 1942

    Terror
    2,996 WTC

I'm no wizard or seer, but I can tell you that technology can fail. So yes, there will be many "Titanics" in the future.

No, but chances are some time in the next fifty years at least one Airbus A380 will go down, probably one owned by a Chinese or Indian airline, which will be a 850 person disaster.

Also here is the current holder of "deadliest air disaster in history", a 747 with 500 people on it in 1985.

If there is another "Titanic" it'll be a starship.

    This

The reason why Titanic was...well Titanic, was a lack of safety, communication and general experience of luxury cruises. Even modern day cruises where things have gone awry, aren't as bad as they might of been if we didn't learn anything from Titanic. It's going to have to be an entirely new form of commercial/luxury travel where we know just enough to send the public out.

At first, I was just thinking about ships in general, and not specifically the Titanic name.

And Snuffe, thanks for pointing this out to me. I'm going to be checking this out now

Yes, and personally I think Bruce Davison could do much better.
