Target asks customers nicely not to bring guns into their stores

So just in case it wasn't already obvious that gun rights groups are ridiculously intransigent, Target simply POLITELY REQUESTING that people not bring their guns into stores starts a firestorm of anger.

OUTRAGED customers have taken to social media after US retail giant Target “respectfully” asked shoppers not to bring firearms into its stores.

In a statement posted Wednesday on the retailer’s corporate blog, interim CEO John Mulligan said that Target wants a “safe and inviting” atmosphere for its shoppers and employees.

“This is a complicated issue, but it boils down to a simple belief: Bringing firearms to Target creates an environment that is at odds with the family-friendly shopping and work experience we strive to create,” he said.

But shoppers took to Facebook, with some claiming they would no longer shop at the store which was impinging on their rights.

“I am no longer shopping at Target due to your policy of allowing firearms in your stores. I appreciate you ‘respectfully’ asking people to leave their assault weapons at home but the people who want to bring their guns in don’t really care about respect for others,” wrote Marsa McKnelly Swatzell.

Another shopper Peggy Conrick said: “No more shopping at Target for my family since Target feels it necessary to prevent me from protecting my family with a legally owned and legally carried firearm. Leaving it at home or in my car is not at option. Any store that doesn’t allow me to protect my family is a store I will not be shopping at.”

Alright, I'm not American so feel free to take my words with a pinch of salt as I'm not familiar with the laws surrounding firearms.

Surely this is a fair request, though? I mean, it just strikes me as strange and unhealthy for someone to want to take a gun with them almost everywhere that they travel to. I'd be pretty intimidated if I saw someone walk past me when I was out shopping and they carried a pistol or something.

Isnt this a damn good reason why they shouldnt bring guns in? lol

    Good ole 'Murica.

    lol.

I understand our rights to bear arms (including firearms), but to refuse to shop at a department store because they asked politely to not pack heat?

I'd think the inside of a department store is probably the very last place you'd ever need a gun.

As an American who supports responsible gun ownership but doesn't feel that people need to be able to carry weapons with them absolutely everywhere they go, I agree with you.

2nd amendment rights doesnt include forcing stores to accommodate your gun posession unless your state allows concealed carry.

Otherwise a business has every right to tell those carrying guns to leave, because being a gun carrier isnt a protected class and thus the business can choose who it wants to let in or not.

This is stupid. Target isn't infringing on your constitutional rights they just don't apply with private entities.

Personally I don't see it as an unfair request. That being said, I'd rather people not leave a gun unsecured in a car.

The store I work at has no firearms signs put up. Always has.

I've never once heard a complaint about it.

Just people looking for a reason to act indignant, and that's coming from a gun owner and CCW holder.

If they do not want someone to legally carry in their business then it their choice, and they will lose business from some of those people because of it.

It will encourage me not to shop there, but if they can take the losses let them.

I really want to "protest" the laws stating you can't carry a knife over a certain length with you by wearing a rapier on my hip in public. Wonder how that would go over.

How does carrying a concealed weapon upset anyone?

Also not sure why people shop at Target. Pretty much does the same shit Wal-Mart does as far as wages go, sells the same shitty China good but for like 10-20% more than Wal-Mart.

I don't own a weapon but refusing to shop somewhere simply because they ask you not to bring a weapon is a little over the top. They can't force you to- all they can do is ask so it shouldn't be a big deal.

Does it get enforced? Do you ever get people arguing about it?

I was under the impression that in 2 states a weapon does not have to be concealed.

Concealed carry permit is irrelevant and even with one you can't force a store to accommodate your gun possession if they don't want to. Even with one you are not allowed to take your gun into any establishment that has a sign prohibiting firearms on every entrance.

    @Squig
I believe that first quote in the article is from some one anti-gun upset that target's stance against gun control is too weak in order to show that target's middle ground stance has upset people on both ends.

Its a perfectly fair request. Just as its perfectly fair to not shop there in response. Though I think the whole "protecting" angle can only go so far. Walking around a city/town? Sure. At home? Absolutely. A department/grocery store? I can see why it would be requested to keep them in their cars (hopefully locked) especially if its not an easily concealed firearm.
It seems like the gun owners against the request are the ones who are so insecure of themselves that they need to be packing heat 24/7 for everyone to see so they can sleep at night. Nothing wrong with guns but don't treat them like dick extensions.
It has been scientifically confirmed that if Eiffel was green; he would in fact die.

Some states have open carry, and those places something like this makes sense, I guess. But most places go for concealed carry.

Ah thats good to know, although I thought there were a few states where concieled carry must be recgnised and respected by businesses.

Because a lot of what has happened lately isn't concealed carry.
Its people like these douchebags that need their penis extenders while getting Oreos. Notice how people tend to shy away from them and get frightened by some idiot with a long gun?
