No, that's not how it works. Pick one, that's all you'll ever get. The rights that the majority enjoy vastly outweigh a few idiots. Making exceptions to people's rights makes them no longer rights, stripping everything free speech stands for.

Agreed. Of course it was meant to be offensive, despite protestations to the contrary. Being offended however is not assault, offending not a criminal offense, and nor should they be.

Now, the people who threw things, were not in the right. They are adults. They are (presumably) able to control their emotions and not lash out physically - I mean that is one of the things that makes society function; we don't haul off and attack someone whenever they do something we don't like.

That said, I really do hope that no one was seriously charged for anything. I mean come on, a water bottle? As long as it didn't actually hurt anyone, I hope that all that amounted was a talking to. Sometimes I feel like when people get authorities involved, its like trying to draw a foul in basketball - full of theatrical melodramatic displays.

These people can't possibly be so dumb. Even if they can honestly not feel it's a racist symbol they have to understand how others do, and it's very clear they understand what it means since they chose to target a black neighborhood.

Already explained that the positive can be for moving forward and accepting that bad things happened but didn't continue as people seen that it was wrong. Why is that so hard to understand. In the past it did yes for a few it does still today. But none the less meanings change its better to use it for something positive than to scowl "sp?" over what it meant in the past.
