    Why don't people play Rogues?

So I was having a debate with someone, I play Rogue, he plays Lock and we were discussing why both classes are the least played, Rogues more so.

I spoke to some top Rogues on my realm and they all dislike Rogue atm, it's making me want to reroll too

So other Rogues, why do you think we're the least played and would you re-roll from us?

I personally think it's to do with, a little Rogue stabbing at Deathwing's little toe compared to what other classes do, doesn't make sense/sound effective and is quite laughable, or it's simply the fact that people don't like the idea of Rogues and Warlocks

Actually we have an overpopulation of warlocks on my server. Rogues are the other hand do seem to be the most seldom played class; most likely due to being the most fragile melee class, being harder to level than other classes, and relying on setting up your combat entrances with stealth rather than running right in.

    Wut

A rogue is a non stop killing machine while leveling and I don't find my rogue fragile. IT has loads of control, loads of escape mechanics while having insane damage output

No one plays rogue? :O I was in an AB not long ago where we had 6 rogues on our team alone!

Nobody else needs to play rogue. I would also prefer if there were no mages, dks, or druids so that the token pieces which drop would be all mine

OT; we have plenty of both classes on Perenolde US, from my own involvement with the people on our server. Not sure if there are less of both, but definitely enough to see them around ORG

I spam 30k backstabs on pvp geared players, and i can kill pve players before they get out of my stuns. I LOVE my rogue.

to say that rogues are unattractive in PVP is a lie since rogues are very controlling, and dominating in the pvp environment, and with recuperate, we are killing machines (with huge crits, and cool gemmics)

A lot of ppl roll rogues thinking it's a faceroll class, it isn't and then they stop playing cause they get owned by everyone. A good rogue is almost unbeatable 1v1, if played well a Rogue can reset the combat and stealth again to once again open on it's pray. A class that to be played well as to be played with patience and a lot of rhythm, since timing is 90% of your dmg, most ppl have no patience or don't know the opposing class abilities so they just mash buttons.

So you think rogues don't do dmg..

I've been playing rogue for the past 7 years & will never change no matter how good or bad my class get. It definitely was a lot more fun back in vanilla when there were no BGs & Arenas for people to hide into, world pvp was awesome back then. I stopped PvPing when burning crusade came out so I'm not sure of the state of the rogue in PvP but it's not too bad in PvE right now + it's got some utility. If you are bored of playing assassination or combat & your guild will allow you to play Sub, give it a shot, it's a lot more complex then the other 2 specs, quite fun & different & the dps isn't all that bad right now.

Rogues have no flavor. I mean its not as bad as warriors and hunters but at least there are some big name warrior characters in lore. Rogues kinda just seem like guys with daggers (which they are) and no one wants to really feel that way.

If they added a little more flavor and maybe fixed our abilities so that theyre interesting. I mean you get slice and dice at lvl 22, eviscerate at lvl 3 and sinister strike at lvl 1. What does a lvl85 combat rogue use?...slice and dice.... eviscerate...sinister strike. O and revealing strike which is sinister strike with a debuff to eviscerate.

Look at assassination. They use slice and dice...mutilate...envenom. You get SnD at 22...mutilate at 10 and envenom is just poison eviscerate.

You can throw in rupture but to be honest Rogues don't get much better after lvl 22.

I'd pay money if blizz made a talent in the assassination tree that turned eviscerate into envenom and then gave us a cool and sparkly ability in its place. Also a talent to make smoke bomb a poison gas bomb if youre assasination. Thatd be pretty sweet to.
"I pulled up to moonglade about 7 or 8
and yelled to the trainer "yo resto cya."
Looked at my talent tree, i was finally there.
To go to Karazhan and tank in dire bear."

They are definitely the least-played class based on census/progress sites, and I believe Blizzard even confirmed that they were in one of those Q&A's, but I don't really want to go digging through those abominations to find it.

As for why... well, who knows? We can wager guesses, but sometimes it comes down to subjective things like the class theme/feel. I'd guess that it's because they're pretty gimmicky (stuns/stealth over more straight-forward survivability) in PVP and not at all the top DPS in PVE (which is all they bring to the group).

I never liked rogues, though I havent tried one since TBC. And I know they have changed quite dramaticly since then, especially when it comes to leveling - with less downtime now.
What's most boring to me is the fact that you basicly spam some attack till you get 5 CP, then a finish move. Rinse and repeat, it got boring really fast.
Also "not enough energy", miss, dodge, parry constantly (mostly while leveling, ofc).

It was jsut to frustrating for me :P Going to give it another go someday.

When Cata came with the talent tree overhauls it completely ruined my rogue for me and I just gave up on him.

I love Spellcasters (healers as well), and that would be the reason for not playing a Rogue.
That being said, I have a Death Knight, Druid (Feral), Paladin & a Rogue in 85.

    ...

Yeah, I was bored of Spellcasters.. So now, she's more like my Enchant / Tailor char.

Honestly though, my reason for quitting a Rogue, is their resource, Energy.
As a Spellcaster, I have my ways to get the Mana back. Rogues have to rely on procs to gain it back.

I play rogue and have done for 6 years (First year was an alt however) I like being different, though it can get boring :/

The only reason I don't reroll to an enh sham (Love that class / spec) is all I've done on my rogue, Hand of A'dal, 80+ mounts, ~26 titles, 48 exalted titles, all the gear, the history of him.

I don't find rogue very exciting anymore :/

many facts. rogues arent as visually appealing as say plate wearers with their huge weapons and armors. we rogues also lack flashy spell animations (which is ok to me). we look stupid playing combat with a dagger as offhand and the spec itself feels pretty boring and broken.

im sure that we also see the smallest numbers of all dps specs. i mean we hit fast yeah, but why hit fast when you can roll mage/warr and crit for +100k with some spells. big numbers are always funnier to see. when i heard blizz was about to reduce passive dmg i thought rogues would be awesome this time. of course at the end blizz did nothing about.

we also have to work harder than most classes when it comes to target switching (dp, rupture, bandits guile etc) and still (as of 4.1. im not raiding in 4.2) do less damage. then about pvp we are harder to play than other classes too. why stab things, manage cds and choose the ideal victim when you can go warrior or feral (i just was critted for 46k ferociuos bite on my 3900 resi rogue) and just do more damage without positional requirements. rogues arent as rewarding as other classes imo.

looking at log sites, i would say that rogues dont scale that good with gear, so even if we can be top during norma mode progression, then we fall behind in heroic mode.

and the list could go on and on...

I used to play them, and as of late I find it real hard, it's kind of depressing.

The worst part is I have no clue why =(.
