Back when I was last playing, you would salvage yellows for Orbs of Ectoplasm, I believe? Those sold for 1g+ a piece on the trading post and along with Orichalcum were a big way of making money. Playing the trading post with the usual buy low and sell high strategy worked too. So, has anything changed? I've done away with my old character since he was mostly a trial and error guinea pig, and now I'm wondering how most of you make your gold these days.
