Update (9:15 PM EDT): Added 6.2 notes update

WoW Down to 7.1 Million Subscribers
Blizzard had their Q1 2015 earnings call today, announcing that WoW is down to 7.1 million subscribers at the end of Q1 2015. This is down 2.9 million from the Q4 2014 call that listed WoW at 10 million subscribers. This appears to be the largest drop in subscriber count in the history of the game.

  • Tokens are not included in this timeframe, as they launched in Q2.
  • World of Warcraft’s revenue performance at constant FX has been more stable, driven by continued strong uptake on value added services, and price increases in select regions, which partially offset subscriber declines, particularly in the East.
  • Heroes of the Storm had over 11 million beta sign-ups.
  • Hearthstone is now at 30 million players, up from 25 million last quarter.

Big reason is PVPers. They get nothing new just bad shit to them all the time. Not everyone raids..

I saw this coming on launch of WoD.

They neutered all the classes to be boring and have no real feel to them. All specs feel exactly the same as each other. Ranged magic specs, all the same. Melee specs, nearly all the same.

Garrisons were a horrid blizzard version of something they should have implemented, player housing. With I don't know, CUSTOMIZATION! The profession builds and profession changes literally made all professions completely worthless. Gathering is worthless, why bother when I get it free in my garrison without having it? Why take LW or Tailoring when I can only wear 3 crafted items and it takes so absurdly long to make I have something better.

Blizzard and WoW has focused on raiding for far too long, thats why it's failing so fucking hard. All the updates all the expansions everything is about raiding. RAIDING RAIDING RAIDING. There is literally nothing else to do but raid, and you dumbed that down to pure boredom. No wonder me and everyone else left. Blizzard needs to pull their head outta their ass and actually listen to people.

Three reasons for me to unsub after 8 years:

Old loot system: How has Blizz not figured out how to "roll" unique gear after 10 years? As an adult gamer with little time to play, its gotten impossible to ignore the archaic systems in place managing the carrots I get at the end of my stick. Thanks for the bonus roll, glad I got that pair of shoes for the fourth straight time.

Garrisons, the feature no one asked for: Pretty much what everyone else has said about them already x 10. Blizz could at least aptly rename them World-Destroyers.

Holinka: What a passive aggressive asshat. No other company has a community forum manager that talks down to its base more. At least GC knew how to talk to Blizz gamers without deriding them every other sentence. Dude is embarrassing and should be put back in his basement cube.

lol. I'm sure if you took the players that don't log on regularly, bots, and box players i'm sure it would be a lot lower that 7.1 million. Sad really, I know WoW will never be where it was during Wrath, but it could be a whole lot more if the way too numerous to mention issues where fixed.

You're assuming Blizzard hasn't been tossing some extra tokens into the AH. The system is designed so you couldn't tell if they were doing this (or the opposite; keeping some tokens out of the AH that someone bought.)

Excellent news. Blizzard needs to either get their shit together or let this game die. The sheep are finally waking up.

Personally, I blame the garrison and an utter lack of diversified content (it's been over 6 months and counting since release, still no content patch) as the root of most of the issues for pve players. Also, whatever happened to the dream of creating a marriage between Timeless Isle and the 5.1 dailies? Why did we just get an even worse timeless isle?
On average, this means they lost a net sub every 4 seconds since the expansion went live.
You seem to ignore the fact that the game is TEN years old. It becomes grey and repetative with a high 'seen it, done that' factor, no matter how awesome the expansions are. A lot has changed, but n essence, the game is still the same. You collect shit and you kill shit, sometimes in small/large groups with easy/hard encounters. Expansions can't really change that, they can only put that core in a nicer jacket. The game is simply aging, which is a MAJOR factor in sub loss.

on the upside: It's still an amazing accomplishment that WoW still has more than 60% of average amount of (paying!!!) subs after TEN years and is by far, the biggest MMORPG on the market. WoW is probably the biggest cashcow game of alltime, on all platforms. Over ten years, they made about 80-120 million bucks a month (subscriber payments only). Lets say they make 5-10% profit, that's about 10 million profit each month. Lets say they made about a billion (1000 million!) in profits in 10 years. That's fucking insane. No wonder the Warcraft movie is coming

It's a game of endless grind with 4 difficulty levels ... way to many ivls and then some freaking bonus ilvl drop on top of that.

    That's not progression... That's hell

No one is debating Wow success over the last 10 years, we all know that Blizzard has done an amazing job with wow over the years and has achieved so much in that time.

We also know that (and what you were kinda leading to) after a decade it should come as no surprise that wow will gradually decline in subscription numbers. However it did not gradually decline, Wow lost 2.9 million players within 4 months (Q1). This was certainly not expected and there are some culprits that are maybe to blame - for example no flying in Wod, PVP/PVE class balance, Garrisons etc.

I like how some people are blaming flying when I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt flying had little to do with the sub drops.

Believe it or not most do not give two shits how you get about and after that group many would prefer to keep flying out of the game indefinitely. Then lastly and most certainly least, the people who threatened to leave over something so trivial and petty yet likely are still playing well beyond the former two categories because they're just that ridiculous.

Seriously, enough about flying mounts. They're such a non-issue that assuming they're a significant contributing force towards subscription drops is laughable.

WoW's problems go much deeper than how you traverse. Come on now.

Well of course I don't think they are outright the reason most people quit (sure, maybe a few, but for the most part no). But you can't deny it's possible it's a contributing factor to no longer finding the game as enjoyable for many people... and that IS the reason most people quit.

In fact, I partially reversed my stance on flying after the expansion. Originally I wanted unconditional flight, like Cataclysm. Now I agree that leveling was fun in Warlords, and so I support having no flying while leveling. I also see the point with max level content, but I think that flying should be allowed in the general continent, with a single separated zone without flight for max level rare mobs, daily/weekly quests, and treasures.

Because of the lack of enjoyment and fatigue people have now with still being grounded, I think I was vindicated for my prediction that even if people sucked up no flight at the beginning of the expansion, eventually ground fatigue will take over as the months drag on.

Blizzard, in the end, was just way too short-sighted in how fun people would find their game and didn't look past the first month of launch. Then after their initially good result, they foolishly doubled down on no flying and same content in 6.1, and now it's biting them in the ass.

Yes, I can deny, and will do so; honestly, Blizzard is better off without them if that contributed to their lack of experience significantly. To me they're not even worth getting into a discussion with.

Again, there are a lot more problems behind the game than that. Hell you spend most of your time sitting in a garrison rather than traveling at all! I'm one of the people that has since WotLK come to realize how problematic and destructive flying inherently is. It isn't the ONLY issue that has made WoW simply no longer enjoyable nor a living world of sorts but they essentially gave you a means to bypass a great deal of their content at any given time and it MURDERS player interaction.

Now obviously group finder, raid finder, and server merging didn't help. The game has ultimately become one long list of features that on paper seem great but in practice consume its very soul. For me, WoW is an extremely shallow experience these days unworthy of calling an RPG. It's more akin to a very overpriced Call of Duty with some of the sorriest combat to be found even among other MMOs of similar stripe.

Seriously, why has no one even bitched about the core of the game which is indeed its combat? It's not intelligent. It's not flashy. It's not even something you can really customize. It's genuinely awful. Sure they've been pruning pointless, cumbersome abilities away but neglect the fact that the classes all end up feeling basically the same - bland and uninspiring.

Meh not too surprised at the loss. All i do is log onto my 100's do the garrison stuff and log over to an alt to play around on if i'm not doing a raid on my main. Pvp is shit, fuck ashran. the conquest gear doesn't even look cool. the garrison just feels like a little chore that i make sure to do every few hours to get gold. why should i bother doing raids and dungeon finder on my alts if i can just have the garrison hand me gear?

I'd really like to do mythic more but the 20 man requirement is fucking my guild over on certain nights making mythic nearly impossible to do on my server if it's not tuesday. want better community? try just removing the dungeon finder so people actually have to talk to other people on the server if they want to do a 5 man or something. ya used to know people on your server because they were awesome, now you just recognize names of people who just sit and troll trade all day. Remove lfr it's a joke and needs to be gone. I mean it was easy as hell before but damn that thing is way to easy now.

i'd like something that is rewarding to do outside of raiding. something that'll give the casuals something to enjoy along with giving the raiders something a little fun to do on the side. i don't know something about the process of getting the rep in wod doesn't feel like i've actually done something to earn that reward. like loremaster for example in wod. it doesn't really seem like i'm doing the loremaster achievement if i just get it naturally lvling through the zones. i'm not a huge fan of dailies but just don't whip out as many as mists had. what they've turned legendaries into is just awful. I don't mind the expansion long quest line, but cmon a ring? you can't even see the damn legendary, and on top of that you may not even be the one actually using the ability that comes with it.

I don't mind that flying is gone but fuck it just put it back in i guess. their plan was to populate the world by taking away flying, but that damn sure didn't populate the world at all so their plan failed there. Also to prevent people from just riding past mobs to their target for the quest which they can still do on a ground mount. the only difference is i may have to fight maybe 5 mobs at once which isn't anything to be worried about even at low gear lvls. if you want to get somewhere quick you can just port to the zone you're headed to and use avianna's feather to just skip right over everything in the way, and zoom over to your destination. kinda defeats the purpose since people are still skipping over everything.

hmmm I think that's everything i can think of that's bothering me about the game right now.
