Why do people get tattoos?

This is a rhetorical question. Let me just address this right away. This is the answer most people will give.

"They look good"

Just like with everything about your appearance, you're not doing it for yourself. I assume you don't spend the whole day in front of the mirror admiring yourself. Whether you get a haircut or you buy yourself good-looking clothes, or you get tattoos, piercings etc., you're not doing it because it looks good, you're doing it because it makes you look good. For other people.

So essentially everyone, who gets tattoos is doing it cause they wanna make themselves look better, either to the other sex, or in general to get more attention. Just look at the sheer amount of porn actresses that get massive amounts of tattoos. Even the guys in porn are often tattooed. It'll be hard to find a guy in porn who isn't. That is because people find tattoos attractive. Especially guys look more dangerous when they have tattoos and that makes them more attractive to women.

So if you are getting a tattoo, that is an admission that you think you are not good enough the way you are. You have to modify yourself. You lack confidence in yourself. "I am not good enough the way I am, so I have to fix myself." That is essentially the same mindset people have that get lots of surgery.

Some people will claim it's because of individualism or something. Like the tattoos mean something to them. That is wrong. All tattooed people look the same. It's just people with paint all over their body. It's like being a punk or a goth or a skinhead. The moment you become part of a subculture, because you are looking for an identity, you become the same as everybody else in that group. You are conforming. Nowadays, it makes you more special if you don't have tattoos.

When I was a kid when you'd see a person with a tattoo it was usually a really cool guy who did really cool shit, or some sexy girl who defied the rules of society and it was awesome to hang around her. It usually was a person who I don't know how to say this..."deserved" to have tattoos.

Since 20...16? onwards, people with tattoos have exploded at least here on the streets of Montreal. Anything from butterflies and potatoes to endless paragraphs of text and images. Is it like a trend to have a tattoo now?

This isn’t the case with my recent tattoo, which in no way was meant to make me “look good”. I got it to remember my dog that recently passed. I could have just hung some pictures and remembered him that way, but I chose a tattoo. It makes me happy when I look at it and it helps me cope with the loss.

You may think you have this figured out, but you really don’t, and you’re just being ignorant at this point.

Surely not a trend (anymore). I think there was kind of a tattoo hype 10-20 years ago, like everybody getting a tribal on the arm or right over the (female) asses. in Germany we made fun of that calling it Arschgeweih or ass antler. Nowadays those who like tattoos get one, others don't. I doubt there is a general "its so cool i gotta have one!" mindset, at least not in middle europe. Here nobody gives a damn if you have or get one. Even cops have tattooed forearms here.

Those are the worst kind of tattoos. I always cringe when mothers get the birthdate of their kids tattooed and shit like that. That just screams "look at me, I'm such a good mother". Just attention whoring.

Few years ago it was rare (at least here) to walk up into somebody that had tattoo. Now everyone and their dog has one. It went from "sub-cultural" thing to "must have or you're not cool" thing. So yeah.

That depends completely on who you ask. I got my tattoo because the motif means a lot to me (FYI, it's not related to gaming or culture or anything like that). I don't show it off to everyone I meet - mainly because it's on my upper arm and I wear long sleeves most of the time - because it's for me.

I wanted it to feel more permanent and like he was part of me forever. I look down at it and I think “that’s my woof... I love and miss you, buddy”. It’s really helped me cause I took his death very hard.

That's your opinion, still more reasons then the only one you could come up with. Not saying some people dont get tattoos because of bad confidence but far from all.

Can even do it to cover up scars.
